There was quite the argument storm in (a) similar rant(s) here, so hope peeps don’t mind how this is just adding to the pile. The tweet uses a lot of web examples and bashed really hard on them.

PS: I do web dev myself, but I have to agree to certain nasty things about it.

Well the first reason that comes to my mind when I read your rant (not the Twitter one tho) is because of limitations, optimization was necessary back in the days. Meanwhile now that development is more accessible with every thing made in web and high-level languages and the way higher amount of resources available in our devices, most people don't spend time learning ways to optimize their stuff.
In my 3 years in computer technique in college we talked about optimization for about 2 weeks and never mentioned it again -_-

@samfreeman05 I’m sorry that I wasn’t clear in my post (I didn’t intend to rant, and still don’t see it as one), but I was pointing to my agreement on the amount of things there are with in web dev today that it is indeed ridiculous, in a good and bad sense. I mentioned somewhere else, but I do believe it is a necessary stage before we can reach a point where a standard is solidified.

As for the point that we now have more resources, sure I agree that we do have more now, but any argument will only become one where we have pragmatists on one side and minimalists on the other. The former argues that we should utilize the extra resources that we have, while the latter would suggest that we optimize what we’ve made. I admit that I side more with the minimalists, but I do believe that we can optimize our existing applications so that the remaining resources can be used to run more stuff concurrently.

@Japorized don't worry I knew your post wasn't a rant, I was referring to it as a "rant" because most people here refer to post as "rants" (my bad) .

And about the minimalist side you mentioned I heavily agree on that (which I was trying to imply in my first comment but I think I wasn't clear ).
More resources should not be an excuse for less optimized applications, Electron is a good example of more accessible tool that uses way too much memory.

But it’s as you said, the general consensus today seems to pivot towards pushing for quantity instead of quality in terms of resource consumption.

People forget how shit it used to be.. I remember on my c64 it started almost instantly but it didn't do anything.. to load a program you had to find a physical tape put it in the drive, rewind the tape, type load, then press play on the tape drive after this you would wait 5-10 minutes for the data to load. All that just for one program. If you want another program you have to go to the shop to buy a tape with that software on and go though the whole process again

@spacem I think the ranter (in this case, the Tweeter) was talking about the time when computers were a little more close to what we have today, before the web actually became big, or perhaps just after the Dot-com bubble. I was to young to experience those, and I had shitty connections till jQuery started becoming big. I do hear these old stories of the Internet (or similar setups) actually being fast with load times, but can never verify how true they are.

On another note, I have used floppy disks tho, cause they were still available in my country even when people have switched to better storages.

Yeah he did a great job posting 93 tweets about GUI on Twitter. What a irony! Atleast he could've posted this list as a simple blog post.

@avitron I didn’t count the number of tweets the user made but that’s an obscene number of tweets 😂 I don’t think he/she was particularly spitting on GUI but on the computer in its entirety? I didn’t finish reading everything when I shared it cause it was so long, but holy cow.

Someone replied this to a reddit post about that rant:
