If the company doesn't pay the government, the company is now illegal and gets sent to court and everyone's lives ruined

If you don't pay the supply chain your competitors will and your business dies because they have product to sell and you don't and nobody cares

Nothing happens if they lack an employee. Just tell the other employees they need to do more work or they'll be fired. Then neg more potential employees; or don't, since you can get a pat on the back for reducing the cost of the department while mushing the existing people to the same or better productivity. Just remember to be promoted before everyone burns out!

Yeah, this fucking sucks. Not to bring feminism into things, but I'm gonna bring feminism into things... But since women are even less likely to even ask for a raise, this is impacting them even worse. My GF even went to complain about how shit the pay is, and that since the inflation everything went up, and she was just told to change her attitude, and work more. (she already works unpaid overtime, because somehow that's the company policy)...

Well to no-ones surprise, people tend to leave jobs over this kind of shit, and serves them well... a company that can't pay it's employees properly anymore has no right to stay in business
