As a kid, I got about 4 sets of those from my school (small, catholic, I was practically the sole tech support... a literal interpretation caused me to "get up and teach" my 2nd grade class HTML(notepad, no internet)). Lasted me well into the free AOL in grocery store checkouts... and everywhere.
DOS is still my favourite, got this intact copy from a goodwill 15yrs ago‐‐ 2$.
Recently had to explain, what a floppy disk was, to my 21yr old, remote (Myanmar), employee/babydev... lost him at: 1.44mb capacity being such a dominant evolution that it persisted through the 90s.
His concluding question: Why does everything take so much more space now? Even the calculator app?
Answer:
Depends, typically one or both of these:
-Capitalism, ignorance, inept devs.
-High-resolution, multi-platform compatibility, the internet and all its security reqs, people building programs via other programs(often inept devs) -
Root797701y@awesomeest Everything is huge now because almost nobody cares. There is zero reason for most companies to optimize.

@Root yeah... but hey, my chronic over-engineering will be totally useful if there's some apocalyptic event! ...right along with my Fortran skills, glass and metal melting, ability use electronic components for opposite the intended use (LEDs as photocells, earbuds as mics...) and literally encyclopedic knowledge. (small catholic school, I read through all 3 sets before finding george orwell in 4th grade)
Tbh, I'm really curious what I'll sound like when I actually am old, if I sound like this at 31. XD <emoticon (had to recently explain that one too) -
@Root ooo... I wonder if there's a ROM glass ceiling somewhere?!? Now I've got something interesting to try to calculate!

@Root More satirical... all, very literally, true.
Frankly, I don't even know if there's something specific im that list that sounds extra outlandish or not. I have no valid frame of reference for a scary amount of things... kinda happens when you find data... aka stuff humans do/make, fascinating and have been fixing BSODs for random people (totally unaware that you'll see the cause/last things they did, whether you want to or not, whilst repairing) since age 8. -
@Root Very true... but yet another case of me being too old for my age apparently; I was born in '92.
I had to explain to the 21yr old burmese babydev what original DOS RPGs were like... the 'so bad it's great' variety. Ofc he had no clue what I meant... so I had him play Captain Bible on a DOS emulator... he couldn't explain why, but really enjoyed it.
He also had many questions about Christianity and the Bible.
So, I told him the origin/beliefs of Mormons
If you haven't heard of captain Bible, it's worth checking out... unless you're Christian and easily offended(though I'm sure it's intent was the opposite). It's hysterical.
