Alright, let me pitch in. You have no real reason not to be a dev, cause there are lots of other jobs that are just plain shit.
You can create a long list of well thought out reasons for not to, especially the seniors. I like to see things in perspective however.1 -
Am I the only one who's always scared out of my mind that there is gonna be some real hard ass purno blasting through my laptop speakers whenever I open it at work in the morning?8
-
Why oh why do I always write "clock" instead of "click".
Answer: I suck at typing ofc.
I'm glad I'm not dyslectic. I have a couple of coworkers that does suffer from it and they say they have to doubly-review whatever they write. That must really suck. They say I'm really lucky to be able to catch typos as I write stuff.3 -
Looking for some career advice. I am currently working as a frontend dev in a design studio (because it just made sense to do so and I do enjoy it). When I started off my professional career, I decided to go frontend and then at some point (maybe) do a transition towards backend. At this point, 2 years later, its looking more like a transition to a fullstack position if there ever is a transition.
Problem is, by next year, I will become a senior frontend dev in a design studio. This sounds to me like I have stamped out a frontend career. Would someone hire me (who is looking for a transition) as anything else than a frontend dev at that point?4 -
Whenever I babysit my nephew's, they get to watch YouTube. But oh man how fucking shite they are, how they amplify they voices, how they act all frantic and shit, and how they constantly wants you to smash that like button.
Lots of YouTubers have moved to twitch because Google doesn't want that kind of content anymore and I totally get why because it seriously makes me wanna die.8 -
Shit guys, I cannot even begin to tell you about how tired I am at seeing gifs at every single.fucking frontend article. I cannot enter a single Medium/Dev.to without it being plastered in the most random fucking gifs you have ever seen.
Its bad enough that your average Medium/Dev.to is as shallow as the little puddle you spill on the floor after watering your cactus. With the added gifs, it just sucks so bad. I mean, who's fucking idea was it to plaster reading material with distracting content anyway? I wanna hunt them down and shove something right up their arses.
Back in uni when I started dabbing into frontend, my feeble brain thought it was quite refreshing after peering over java docs every day. Nowadays though, I cannot even manage to read these mostly shitty arse articles without wishing I was dead.
Also, I wonder if this is also the case for the java, .net, python, rust community?15 -
So its apparently "blackout tuesday", but why am I seeing people sharing a black screen with some hearts on it?
It does say "blackout", right?2 -
I think the Franz platform has the weirdest bug I have ever seen on frontend. For the unknowings, Franz is basically a wrapper for chrome instances that lets you gather up all your teams, slacks, emails and the like into a single desktop application (and it eats your memory like the memory monster).
Anyways, when I type a message somewhere, the input will sometimes lose focus and focus on another input in another chrome instance. So for example, I type a message on slack, the input loses focus (which I don't immediately notice) and the rest of the message is typed out in teams instead.5 -
Anyone using a paid font in their code editors? I have been using the regular old Fira Code on my workbenches, but lately I've kinda opened up to the idea of actually buying a font because I would use it almost every day. If you did, what made you do it?7

I generally do not like google for many reasons, but if they added this feature to android "disable app notifications by default", I would love and kiss them to death.
Notifications these days are just about the most abhorrent feature of smart phones. I have never owned an iPhone so cannot say anything about that, but on Android its just bad. The system itself is good, but its being misused by developers. Today I checked out this app called "CPU Cooler", its one of those apps that tricks people into believing they should close apps in order to save battery life. Anyways, I opened it, I "cleaned my phone" and closed it. About an hour later I got this notification "heeey, you haven't cleaned your phone in a while".
Fuck off, uninstalled.
If it ever becomes socially acceptable, I would buy a Nokia brickphone in a heartbeat. My cousin said we would be much better off without smartphones and he is (possibly) absolutely right.9 -
I am this shitty ass frontend dev that knows one language and one framework, I only do light logic and I can't even do a quick sort algorithm.9

Does anybody have any good analogies for explaining the difference between frontend and backend?
I have been thinking about a possible keyboard analogy since a keyboard is very well understood these days. This only really works for membrane keyboards, but that's fine.
We can all guess where this is going. If you remove the keycaps from a membrane keyboard, you pretty much cannot use it unless you poke into the membrane with something else. So the keycaps are the frontend. They are generally labeled so you know what they do, they are organized into some form of layout which can vary even on a country-by-country basis, they may have pretty colors and they make it easier to interface with the backend. The backend is the rest and the users don't really have to know how it works, its just supposed to work.
For mechanicals, obviously, the removal of the keycaps means it becomes a shitty frontend that is not easy to use, but does have great potential.5 -
Gotta be honest, I'm getting real sick of seeing "View my verified achievement" posts on LinkedIn. I have gotten a few certifications, but I have never posted them on LinkedIn because its irrelevant for 98% of my peers. How about simply telling your relevant peers of your so called achievement. Your manager would probably interested in knowing, but most of your 500 followers sure ain't. You can still put your certification on your LinkedIn profile for the recruiters to glob over while doing the rest a favor.2

I have a question, but first some background. When I got my first job, it wasn't clear cut what I would do, but I ended up doing frontend. I really liked doing frontend, so I continued doing so and I still do to this day. I even work alongside designers in a design studio, so I feel very much like a frontend developer.
Obviously, the term "frontend" these days implies someone, in some ways, writing a web, mobile or desktop app using javascript. For me, frontend is also about stuff like accessibility, design, code delivery, and understanding the end-users and the designers that may have prototyped something for you.
I have not been active in any other dev communities than this place, but it seems to me like a frontend developer is pretty much the lowest common denominator ( I guess in terms of skills). If I am right, I do not know why, which is why I'm hoping someone could explain.9 -
Daily coding would be VS Code.
> Lots of extensions and works well if the project isn't too big.
Quick and cheeky edits is Notepad++.
> "Open in Notepad++"
Serverside edits is vim.
> I don't really know any other terminal editors.
IDE would be the IntelliJ platform.
> Its just built very nicely.
For SQL (which i don't do very much) I took a liking to Azure Data Studio. -
I would like to take a moment and recognize LiLi as the possibly most outlandish design for any software ever without looking horribly ugly. I mean just fucking look at it, it heavily relies on transparency, it uses traffic lights, it uses weird glowing bars, you cannot resize it, you cannot minimize it, it has this random mash of colors in the logo, it heavily relies on gradients, the border edges are very rounded and aliased, you have no idea where the boundaries of the fucking thing is.
Overall, its fucking great guys. I have no idea where the inspiration came from, but possibly the windows aero and a mishmash of other things?21 -
So obviously, these days we rely a lot on video calls. But that has pretty much spurred my hatred for it, because basically everything is shitty about it and it annoys the hell out of me.
The voice quality is horrendous for the most part, it jerks around, and you have echoes and microphones picking up background noises. The video quality is the same basically.
It just drives me fucking nuts, you know.3 -
Question for iOS users (not that I'm looking into an iPhone, just curious)
What is the general state on app notifications? Because I've just about had it with the absolute fucking torrent of notifications whenever you install some random app on Android.
You install some random exercise app and the next day it will say "so did you get your exercise you lazy fucker?".
You install some random food recipe app and it immediately tells you to get your luncheon going with over a billion recipes (and probably all bad)7 -
Today my grandmother called and told me she wasnt able to login to her account for her ISP. Alright, maybe shes confused about the passwords as we had to change it recently. No, turns out they still have this "oh sorry you typed your password incorrect three times, so we will lock your account and your granny have to do the 2 hour telephone queue"
You and your fucking outdated auth practise can go and kindly fuck yourself. Fix this shit before I get real mad.5 -
I often look on instagram, and you know, instagram being instagram, its the most ad loaded platform I know about. Anyways, most of the ads I see are various bags and wallets that are slightly different and they have all raised a millionty billionty bucks on kickstarter. I betcha you can go to Wish and get something basically the same, the build quality will be the absolute pits, but at least you know that beforehand.1

Try googling "electron", is your top hit the framework electron or the elementary particle electron?11
-
Oh ffs, just fucking inject a chip into my finger already for authentication purposes, you can track my every fucking move if you so wish. When a web page like twitch uses 2FA it boggles my mind because its a page where you're watching some fucking videos.
"hey there, so out of the blue, we send you a code to your email, we won't tell you which so good luck. Also, you cannot copy paste this code because we did that fucking thing where each character has its own textbox"
Of course, this is only because we are dumb enough to reuse shitty passwords. THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.31 -
So for 2020, will there be a new cool language to bash on, or will it continue to be JS and python?
I find it strange how python hate is just popping up everywhere and to me it seems like it just started happening nov/dec.11 -
Does anyone else really dislike "foo", "bar" and "baz"? Because fuck me I do. My brain can't process that stuff, I need some actual real world context.
or, maybe i'm just dumb.8
