@vicary My boss wrote his first program in 1979 and for 20 years it was a Cobol developer.

It’s not gonna disappear any soon, so yeah there were practices to solve your problem.

They suggest using classes and interfaces to pass whatever value/references around to save our asses from all those missing ampersands.

Or you know... stop using PHP.
