Ubuntu vs mint ;)

How's that a tough question? I find mint way better

I don't like mint. Its mainly because I don't like cinnamon. It seems to me like they try to look like windows with their start menu and stuff, I think it looks like a cheap Chinese replica of that. Purely subjective stuff 😄

I do like Ubuntu tho, even more so now that it uses gnome 👌

@ShivamRawat0l Honestly it depends of your needs and the experience you have with Linux. Installing Arch when you know nothing about it can be rough for example.

@ShivamRawat0l Ubuntu is good for beginners, but you really should gradually move out after you feel comfortable with managing your OS. Think of it as a primary school where you learn your ABC's and shit

@Audy I have used Kali Linux for a month and I was using windows and it sucks!! So I thought of moving back to Linux but there are so many options and every Linux have its drawbacks !! I am thinking about mintos

@ShivamRawat0l Kali is not really suitable as your day-to-day OS, is specifically aimed for security experts and pentesters, and should only be live-booted in the first place. I personally use Debian because so many distros are derived from it, and it's heavily customizable, but the choice is up to you. My advice is don't run away if you get the error or break something, that's when you learn the most.

@ShivamRawat0l Manjaro is nice, as for avatar open menu, click profile and then press on the avatar.

Ubuntu is nice, simple and stable af. So is Debian. I love Arch but will never consider it for a work solution. Fedora is also a great option and Manjaro is like an ubunru version of arch.

@ShivamRawat0l You should, Long-Term Support or LTS is a version of Ubuntu that is supported 5 years from it's release. It's really stable and is generally aimed towards servers rather than desktops although desktops can use it as well. As for why they don't have it I don't know as I don't follow Ubuntu-related news.

@ShivamRawat0l I run mint with my 1070, nothing to complain about. And it get less updated because it's based on the LTS versions of Ubuntu.

I prefer mint. Less taxing on the ol hardware

@ShivamRawat0l Well I don't know if those games are compatible. You can eventually check here for steam games. But then again, don't expect that your whole library to run "out of the box" on linux.

@ShivamRawat0l Wine is not an emulator ^^. But you'r right, it can be rough sometime to run game with wine.

I'm on Xubuntu (lighter distro built on Ubuntu). Be sure to use version 16.10 unless you're feeling adventurous.

Runs games built for Windows (with Wine) well with a bit of fiddling. I managed to get Wolfenstein 2 running with no issues.

It's a stable distro 👌

@saintograph what is difference in Ubuntu and xubuntu. Xubuntu have safe features ?? Dpkg etc. I don't know much right now about Linux !! Xubuntu have the store like Ubuntu ??

@ShivamRawat0l Xubuntu doesn't come bundled with the bells and whistles that sometimes cause issues for certain users.

It's lightweight; if your system is older that's a good thing.

Another choice is Kubuntu, which is a minimalist dream come true (unless you're an Arch user).

Google 'Pop OS'. It's a beautiful, functional distro. I run Unity with it.

It's built on top of Ubuntu as well.

Honnestly, I don't think we are helping the guy at all xD

@ShivamRawat0l just try them all! Just try a handful of distros by putting them on a USB and booting off of it. After that pick the one you like and install it.

As a side note: When choosing a distro have 2 categories in mind. The Desktop Envrionment (DE) and the base distro. The DE is the thing you stare at (the GUI, basically startmenu and bundled apps and what not), and the base distro is the actual Linux distro (different package managers, update tools, etc).
For example if you like KDE and Fedora then use Fedora KDE remix. Likewise, if you like Budgie with Ubuntu, get Ubuntu Budgie.

Once you pick make sure its compatible with all your hardware. Pretty much everything should work, but your Nvidia gpu might be a problem (make sure you can use the Nvidia binary driver).
When in doubt, google your computer or the part model (like: Gtx 1050 Ubuntu support).

@ShivamRawat0l personally I use KUbuntu: I like KDE, and I find Ubuntu has a nice middle ground of stability and updates. Also works nice with my NVidia Optimus gpu.

Choose a simple/easy distro for now, and if you want move on to something more advanced ones like Arch.

@ShivamRawat0l My typical suggestion for total linux noobs is xubuntu. Debian testing would probably also be good, though it's a slight bit more hands on like manjaro

@Froot it kinda really is. It has some other environments, it champions mate and cinnamon, but one can easily install those ins any other distro. I guess some people prefer Mint because they do not like the way Canonical does some things. For example when they brought Unity as the primary de for Ubuntu everyone went ape shit. To me both distros are practically indistingushable and normally just go for Ubuntu. This is a common issue with Linux, waaay too much fragmentation.

@Lahsen2016 But it doesn't. The default search is gnome search tool. And even in unity they removed it a long time ago.

@AleCx04 Yea, contrary to popular belief in the community, fragmentation is a problem. Thankfully Ubuntu has sort of been fixing it.
