select the image you want to view

press space. the image viewer will open

use arrow keys to navigate the folder, and wherever your focus is will display in the image viewer

you can even click away into a different folder, it will work

Preview app is different. It's more of an editor than viewer. It allows drawing on pics, combining multiple PDFs into one and much more

if you want to view multiple pics in there, just select all pics in the folder with Cmd + A, then open them in Preview. You can navigate around with arrows there too

well, everything about apple hardware and software is tailored to perfectly fit the average apple user.

I don’t disagree but see it this way: "next image" only makes sense in the context of a file system, which you typically interact with via Finder. So to navigate through your images you just use preview (space key) and arrow keys in the Finder.

As I always say, most frustration about macOS comes from users bringing their expectations from other OS and the lack of realization that some things are just different, but not worse.

@electrineer nobody has a problem with disliking something. Taste is not debatable.

It’s something different when one complains about something being missing or broken in macOS when it’s factually wrong and it’s just different from Windows or whatever.

You may not like that it’s different, but at least have the decency to admit that it’s not broken and you were just complaining because you hate Apple.
