Biggest interview of my entire life is coming up on Thursday. I really need this to go well - it's more than double my current salary, at a time where I'm really starting to struggle to make ends meet. There's an actual "team", and from my interactions with them over the last four interviews, I think they're cool people. It's still a little unusual, because although there's a team or cohort of seniors that I'd be joining, every senior developer is still somewhat siloed, leading their own juniors. I'd also get to be remote 75% of the time, which I think I've realized is a "must have" benefit.

I don't know if it's coincidental or just bad timing then that I've been having episodes of pretty intense vertigo and panic attacks far more frequently than normal lately - even before I had this interview lined up. I realized recently that I must have some kind of anxiety disorder. I don't know if that's from the military, or just from being fucked up via my own missteps. But I can't keep having these attacks.

Anyone who's willing to share - I don't really have anyone to ask. How do you deal with this type of thing? I went to see a shrink last year, but he just gave me pills that replaced these issues with others.

No experience with vertigo, but I do have occasional anxiety attacks.

For me I feel like I'm dying, which makes me think I'm dying, which increases the anxiety, convincing me I'm dying. To deal with that I just let myself die, and when that doesn't happen I'm good.

Kind of a "gotta go through it" kind of deal, so the faster you get through the sooner your back to baseline.

@lungdart thanks for that perspective! I'll try just letting go and going through it next time one hits. Easier said than done though, because the impulse is definitely to resist it. As you said, this just makes it worse. Mine usually aren't quite the same, but I can see a parallel in that much at least.

    Hope that helps!

For me at least, lifestyle is pretty much everything - did I get enough sleep? Enough water? Food? Am I eating like shit? Have I been smoking cigarettes/consuming nicotine? How long have I been staring at this screen? Have I been stressed? Clenching my jaw? etc etc

Vertigo could be caused by blood pressure spikes, which coincide with anxiety (at least in my experience), but anxiety and stress are funny in that the mimic symptoms of other issues.

I also deal with chronic migraines and cluster headaches so it's pretty much a coin toss on which thing is causing which symptom most days lol.

Also, there is a strong link between neck pain/tightness and dizziness/vertigo. Something to consider

    Meditation and supplements help.

Finding things you enjoy … doesn’t help much. Making things better in your life, even the small things, helps a lot. Find something you’ve been meaning to do but putting off, and do it. You’ll feel much better.

chamomile tea. there's some fun drugs also, like cordyceps I guess. nigella sativa over the longer term, etc

there's people that say liver reduces anxiety and it's been healing me from my health issues which give me mania. I guess that's same as anxiety cuz I feel like I'm dying the whole time

I take daily walks, at least 20 minutes

smell of plants can be calming as well

yeah, don't eat junk. no processed foods, those stress your body out. as does sugar.

there's stuff called adaptogens that can make you better with stress at stressful moments. maca counts as one I guess, Korean ginseng, Siberian ginseng. ginger tea or ginger can be calming as well if part of a diet

meditation music. there's weird stuff on YouTube and if you have headphones and lay down and close your eyes it's very nice. there's ones for releasing oxytocin, and your body has a see-saw relationship between cortisol and oxytocin so it's a quick way to relax (like 5-20 minutes)

@Root due to me being sick if I find stuff I enjoy my body gets sicker =[

might be cuz I like exciting things tho. however. I wish to share my utmost frustration.

    oh yeah

lifting weights very vigorously is what I do if I'm really seriously panicking

also I guess hot milk baths. I bring my phone in with a ziplock bag and listen to a podcast and chill in the bathtub. that relaxes me for a while

@jestdotty I’ve been taking holy basil, dong quai, ashwaganda, and a bunch of magnesiums (a good complex). I definitely notice the difference in stress levels/response and sleep quality.

@Root oh ashwanagdha was instant but... going off that was very bad. I developed tolerance to it quickly and then I was chasing the dragon. had to peter off so that wasn't gonna work

magnesium didn't do anything for me but b complex and iodine specifically from kelp help with my metabolism issues

also methyl B12 helped with the mania / fatigue (I didn't even know I had fatigue) to some degree

dong quai I guess is the same as maca. idk fake estrogen seems much to me

maca is technically a food that just allows your body to make the hormones it needs to. works for both male and female hormones

I go off it before I have my period then forgot to go back on it and it was a month before I stopped feeling the effects. ragghh need to remember to go back on it again

    @nosoup4u Any update? :)

@jestdotty Oh dear, that has me worried about ashwaganda a bit.

The B12 helping with fatigue makes sense as most people are deficient.

@Root I eat a lot of meat and fish so I shouldn't have been

it's more than likely because the B12 was the methyl variant and methyl is a very good detox agent

@Root Yes, I got the job! My current employer is PISSED though, not really the reaction I was expecting. Oh well.
