it's crazy how every week every damned app needs to update

it's like just why

I'm sure your button 3 pixels to the left isn't that important

all these poor auto-updaters running all the time

imagine the carbon we're arbitrarily making like alchemists out of thin air! if only we used this great power to transmutate lead into gold

Especially the bank app. Every time when I want to pay something, it fails because I have to update again. What has to be updated on such app every time?

Usually, it's just the client facilitating for underlying system or API changes.

    9/10 times security related.

1/10 times it's moving that button by 1 pixel.

@retoor Bank apps have it bad, though. The requirements put on those are insane, e.g. something as trivial as changing one letter in a linked PDF requires a whole new signed app release, because link targets have to be checksum controlled.

    @cprn I believe that.

I forget what I was even complaining about

I was actually updating Linux packages lol

but a notable one is discord. there's no security concerns in discord (and I have a story about that but too lazy. they don't care about security)

also why the hell is vscode updating all the time. def not security

obsidian updating makes sense since they're still developing the app and I get excited every time

Vivaldi I ceased being excited ever since the tab stacks. now they have bugs they haven't fixed for several versions and I don't think their updates have been that meaningful. for every new change there's a 50/50 they're going to break something and not fix it for the next 2 years

also tho my gpu drivers broke somehow so I just plain uninstalled them. will care later. sigh

@jestdotty Oh, yeah. Discord totally updates just because it has the built-in store, and they need new functionalities for promotions and so on. So literally nothing to get excited about — “we need you to install this update, because we've added yet another feature that tries to sell you something”. Most users don't even know it has a store. I'm pretty sure it used to have a games library as well (because Epic), but I can't find it now.

Also, I'm one of those freaks using Vim, so no idea what you're talking about in regard to those other apps.

Lack of a GPU driver sounds like an issue, though.
