Just installed Kubuntu on my netbook.

I can be lazy now and control my netbook from my phone 😊
Also notification sync, file sharing etc!

You can also use your phone as a touchpad with KDE connect. Not much useful but it's cool.

If synced data goes through a server tho, you know... Have you checked the encryption that it uses?

KDE-connect works only in the local network.

@HAlex Oh no it's only LAN. Can't even use it outside my own network. I know it uses ssl but haven't checked anything beyond that yet.

as long as you have a nice processor and some extra ram to spare, KDE is pretty cool!

@linuxxx I'm wondering... Don't you have your own cloud at this point? And if so, why not?

Since you're a sysadmin (if I understand it correctly) it should be a piece of cake for you - and it's such a quality of life improvement.

I have my whole documents, pictures, videos, etc. directories in my own, personal cloud (nextcloud) which is available in my network or over dyndns and don't need to worry about data loss due to hardware failure or crypto viruses due to daily, incremental backups and everything is synced between all desktop devices (and accessible from mobile).

I have my calendar, my android contacts and my password manager right in the cloud.
I would've expected that you're the first person to get yourself one. :)

@theCalcaholic I'll have that soon. The problem is that for the last two years I've had a very bad Internet connection. Which makes that only a local cloud could be possible (also only locally accessible).

Aha great. I am using kde for over two years now.
I'm really impressed how they're now keeping up with everything.
When kde 5 launched so many criticizing and real hatred.
Back in the time so many serious bugs were there too.
But with every year they're keep growing and coming up with great usual things.
Recent one is kde vault in 5.11.
Look forward to how 5.12 works out.

@linuxxx Ah, that's understandable. I got a 100/20 Mbit connection, which is fine for only a few (maybe less than 20) cloud users.

Also it only costs me 30 Euro/month! I'll miss that ISP, should I move...

@theCalcaholic Fun thing is that I've got the servers for it, they're just of no use for backup with this Internet :P

Kubuntu is amazing!
Let alone the functionality, all those fancy visual effects are l33t!

Though I have to admit that last week I did drunkenly install KDE on my Unity Ubuntu and fucked everything up.
