@HAlex Yeah, it works exactly like that. You can also target on race and religion.
-
HAlex27757y@Floydian who posted the ad doesn't get your data, Facebook is not selling your data to "Morton Salt" in this case, it's just showing an ad when certain conditions are met.
-
HAlex27757y@linuxxx the fact that who paid for the ad will never know who visualized the ad, it's not selling profiles in my opinion. It depends on how you see it, if you don't like Facebook ads, don't use Facebook. But in this specific case, your data remains in Facebook's servers
-
@HAlex I see Facebook ads all over the web unless I use an ad/tracker blocker! I don't use facebook.
-
HAlex27757y@Floydian conditions that are based on your personal data THAT, in this case, ONLY FACEBOOK can treat.
In this case, Facebook is not selling your data, it's just using it *internally* to choose whatever ad you should see -
HAlex27757y@linuxxx I've never seen Facebook ads unless it's not an advertisement for itself (using other platforms like Google AdSense).
I don't understand. -
@HAlex Oh I have! And add to that, those pesky like buttons also track you outside of facebook.
-
HAlex27757y@linuxxx oh, now I know what you mean. Share buttons and things like that. Well this is a completely different story, but yes, it looks like that the only way to go is stay away from websites like this and disable JavaScript. But then we need a different approach to the web, most of the websites nowadays won't work without js
-
@HAlex Also like/share buttons* I see ads as well from fb if I don't enable ad/tracker blockers
And you can easily block those specific blockers actually! -
@Floydian Hosts file can direct hostnames to any up address! So facebook.com to 0.0.0.0 for example ;)
-
@Floydian It's not much installing but sure! Are you on any encrypted chat platform?
-
Pointer32377y@HAlex Yeah, one thing it's selling your data like "Hey, do you wanna know all about X guy in Y country? $20 bucks" and other it's using the data "you provided" to internally choose what content to show you.
Also, I've only skimmed through Facebook privacy policies, but if I'm not mistaken, the "privacy" setting on your info it's what determines a lot of things, I mean, if you upload content as "public", you're agreeing that it is of "public domain", and thus, anyone can do anything with it.
Maybe I need to read that again, just to be sure, but that's what technically said the last time I checked. -
HAlex27757y@Pointer yeah, when you set the privacy to "public" you're giving away every fucking piece of your post (content, photos, comments...)
-
Froot75397y@Floydian Yea fuck capitalism! Communism was way better! At least in communism you can get a free trip to the Gulag once in your life.
... yea, fuck you man ... -
Froot75397y@HAlex I also agree with your side on the selling Vs not selling personal data here.
Life ain't black and white like people try to make it to be... -
@Floydian As for end to end crypto that's hard because new keys would have to be generated every time.
Take a look at riot.im maybe? -
Froot75397y@Floydian Oh I just assumed you were talking about modern market systems. Did you prefer feudalism then?
-
Froot75397y@Floydian Heh, yea, maybe.
Well, as Churchill said, democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others -
Froot75397y@irene I strongly disagree.
Firstly, they're not kings. You can vote them out.
Second, being a group, the represent the population better than any one so he ruler would.
But what sort of system would you prefer then?
