"Release"

    Oh is that a new age word for early access?
  • 4
    @lxmcf nah, the other way around it feels. Early access means release these days.
    I'm just joking around, i am a bit pissed about the whole dev-movment of "just throw something out there, we won't go further than this one functionality anyway".:b

    You're not talking debug vs release build, aren't you?!
  • 4
    @Alice rly? I don't have this impression actually.
    I think a game like Sims 2 in it's completeness could happen these days. It feels like since minecraft pulled this buy my alpha for 10 bucks thing everyone wants to do it this way but somehow it doesn't really work out.
    Maybe I only see the bad day z, unity, pubg things but i see them as a majority.

    @sunfishcc I'm talking about no man's sky for example.:D
    Even tho it was a release back then - hell, this game was just plain void. Moon Simulator from greenpepper games or how shit was called did a better job back in the days.^^

    @sunfishcc *moon tycoon.
    For reference:

    @Alice just realizing that Sims 2 didn't came out 1990, i can't speak for these 10 years except for pokemon and stuff like that. But being born in the 90s means the most "releases" you witnessed would've happened 2000+.^^

    @daintycode googled nier, the robot with sexy butt still has release date. Paid beta, such as PUBG, exist because small pc game team wanna cash out?!
  • 0
    @sunfishcc don't know what you wanted to tell me with nier but if pubg is an open beta, i take this one back of course, didn't know about this. Still it seems like it takes quite some time to finish it, seen how fortnite just came outta nowhere and seemed more like an actual release.^^

    @daintycode high quality console games usually don't have open beta. Resident evil 7 for example
  • 1
    @sunfishcc exactly, because especially back in the days there was no way of updating console games. And instead of having one worms game getting tons of updates, there were dozens of worms games. All of them with tons of missions, working local multiplayer and in itself completed. Not that worms is an uber A+++ title.^^
    Same for tekken, ...

    @daintycode when developers aren't confident enough, early access seems more forgivable. They got micro transaction anyway, the initial price doesn't matter too much.
  • 1
    @sunfishcc right, but imho this is bullshit.^^
    You don't go to a restaurant and are okay with some half-cooked food you have to pay fully because the cook started three days ago and is not confident enough, are you?:D
  • 1
    @daintycode now, we got micro transaction, seasonal pass, and all these random craps...
    Even you paid for that shit, you can't use it next year. For example, hearthstone

    @sunfishcc the way bigger problem this brings is imho differing the "gimme ya cash" from "dude i like deving and made a lil game, ya mind giving me a dollar for coffee?".
    I see this for myself, i started fiddeling around with game development and making own engines (nothing notable of course) for stuff before unity was a thing.. and then all the sudden there where games which i made back in the days to test features of the fucking engine.
    Now don't get me wrong. Unity is a cool thing, it helps starters getting into shit and not everything made these days is crap. But the crap get's more and more. Back then we laughed about chinese bootlegs of games, now we buy these fucking things.^^

    I know this sounds a bit like I'm just angry because I didn't push out a wonder of modern game development and it's true. But it is partly because I don't even know where to release anything non-professional without being ignored or jumping on the gimme ya cash train.:b

    @daintycode PC first player shooter:
    PUBG: hide in a lucky spot, and waiting for chicken dinner.
    OW: a Japanese cyborg comes out from nowhere and kill you with a knife instantly
    Quake: live die repeat

    I love how this conversation tilted completely, can't even be mad.:D

    We got a thing at work where you get water as nicely cooled fizzy water, filtered and everything. Actually better than coffee, especially in the morning.😍
