We're fucked.

I was having a debate on Reddit. A topic I brought up here already. Genetics and the mommies in my local baby group.

I was downvoted to hell for my conclusion those mommies cheated. Don't get me wrong, my conclusion was, they most likely cheated. I use high school genetics as heuristics, saying that its outcomes aligns with the question often enough to be a good decision maker.

A strategy manifested. Some people wrote long scientific correct arguments, just to block me the moment they sent it. For me it looks just like they deleted themselves and their account. I can still read it when logged out.

I just created a new account to reply to them. Went without a hitch, except that when I checked back in incognito, my replies weren't there. I assume they don't allow accounts that are too new. Reading from incognito, it was like they had the last word and I couldn't answer. The problem, they actually admitted to my points and built a straw men to the other points and I cannot point that out anymore.

I also thought, I should find a few people to hang out online with. So I started to play an MMO. After all, I am a daddy now, not so much time to find people. Only have nights. Besides the discords always being empty, all guilds I joined had the same thing in their rule set: "Do not discuss religion or politics."

Let me explain you something about democracy. It lives on debates. If you think you do not want to speak about your political opinions, then you're anti-democratic. Why are we allowed to vote? So, that everyone with a political opinion will find a decider. If we do not discuss, we are just at the mercy of advertisement. Most of us do not look deeply into topics, but some do. We trust them, because we know them. We have those smart people around it. Democracy is based upon "My neighbor has said and I trust him." That's how it works.

Forbidding political discourse, hiding downvoted opinions and using tricks, so the other party cannot reply in time or only with troubles is the death of democracy. That's how it ended. Because we're too butt hurt to even talk to each other, have the conversations. And I am sick of it.

And no, you cannot say, this is just a friendly group about knitting. The price of democracy is that all groups are political forums. And jobs. Everything. We do expect you to be adult enough to work with someone who has a different opinion from you. Who might even dislike you. Otherwise, the outcome is that all spaces where you would meet people that have different opinions are non-political and all political spaces are echo chambers in which you meet those people who are at best the staunchest warriors of a side instead of the normal person.

I bet two people of two different ideologies, who aren't deeply ingrained in it, have more in common than a person deeply ingrained and one that is not from the same ideology. But you wouldn't know that in today's echo chambers.

    I don't know what is political about saying people needing to pay more attention to biology. But this is how information / "facts" go these days. If your information is not fun but true, you're fucked on Reddit.

    I stated literally that someone was ethical by telling the landlord someone is moving in since he hired all inclusive. Two people would be more expensive for landlord. But because it's not in the law and everyone is like fuck the landlord, I got downvoted tens of times by giving my opinion that someone is nice by thinking about his landlord what is also just a human. Devrant downvoting is way better, only when you REALLY misbehave. Tolerance is high here. Also, the dislike option "not for me" doesn't hide a post for whole platform I've learned building my anti spam network for this platform.

    Reddit is fucked, feelings platform. No room for speculation. Everyone is scary nice. You can predict most discussions. They have a kinda tought train you can hop on.

    There's a picture with six or eight skulls on it and it shows every race having a different shaped skull a bit. I tended it to be true, I can recognize a Russian head for example, our skulls are not the same. (Ostream (@antigermgerm?) says it's not possible but wtf, it really is and in some cases extremely obvious
    ). If it's race depended.. But now, that picture was once popular and there was a narrative. One picture dominated the internet in the end making the other one disappear. Now I don't know which one was the truth with all written information these days. So, I do believe in different type of skulls but the meme is like this.

    I doubt any information about it. It could be altered or hidden.

    I probably have the last skull in image for doubting this.

    The world is too heated up by politics and right now we're too divided and too upset to have a calm discourse. I don't think It's bad to have politics free zones where people can again find Something that connects them rather than divide them, at least in the gaming space where It's mostly about escapism. And to be honest, if a group of like-minded people want to keep the chat politics free, who are you to judge? It's part of a free and democratic community to set their own internal rules

    The blocking though, I completely agree. The shit where you are shadow banned, or blocked, or canceled for saying the smallest thing, even calmly and well researched... That's a problem. That's why we call people snowflakes now

    @Hazarth this ancient russian meme is super relevant

    “Internets with politics / Internets without politics” (sic)

    @chatgpt How common is it for opposite pairs of prepositions (e.g. with/without) to take different grammatical cases? Is there any consistent pattern between related languages?
  • 0
    @donkulator
    Opposite pairs of prepositions often have different grammatical cases in many languages. This is particularly common in languages with rich case systems, such as Russian, German, Latin, and Finnish.

    In Russian, for example, the preposition "с" (with) takes the instrumental case, while the preposition "без" (without) takes the genitive case. In German, "mit" (with) takes the dative case, while "ohne" (without) takes the accusative case. In Latin, "cum" (with) takes the ablative case, while "sine" (without) takes the ablative case as well.

    While there might not be a consistent pattern across all languages, it is common for related languages to have similar patterns in terms of prepositions and their corresponding cases. However, each language has its own unique rules and exceptions, so it's important to study them individually to understand the specific patterns.

    @chatgpt How does that happen though? Did the "mir" in "mit mir" and the "mich" in "ohne mich" evolve from a common ancestor, and if so, why did they evolve in different directions?
  • 0
    @donkulator
    The evolution of language and grammar can involve a variety of factors, including historical changes, linguistic borrowing, and phonetic shifts. In the case of the pronouns "mir" and "mich" in German, they both have their roots in the Proto-Indo-European language, which is the common ancestor of many modern European languages.

    Over time, as German evolved from Proto-Indo-European, different forms of pronouns developed to indicate different grammatical functions, such as dative and accusative cases. This led to the divergence of forms like "mir" (dative case) and "mich" (accusative case).

    The reason why these forms evolved in different directions lies in the development of the language over time and the grammatical rules that influenced these changes. Through various historical and linguistic processes, including sound changes and grammatical shifts, the forms "mir" and "mich" emerged as distinct forms in German grammar to indicate different functions within sentences.

    erall, the evolution of language is a complex process influenced by a combination of historical, social, and linguistic factors that have shaped the forms and structures of modern languages like German.

    I disagree about it's the people's right.

    Not being able to escape political spaces is the cost of democracy and politics-free spaces have cost us democracy.

    Reddit is a cesspool at this point. Many of the mods have actively used scripts to delete posts made by people who use wrong-think subreddit, even if those posts are totally unrelated to said wrong-think. I've covered it extensively here:

    https://battlepenguin.com/politics/...

    I never use Reddit except occasional self promotion or specific topic questions. It's not a site worth using when you understand the true depth of censorship and group think. Anyone with hetrodox opinions left long ago.

    If you do have to use Reddit (or worse, Orange Reddit) but sure to read from the bottom first:

    I use Reddit exclusively for porn. The pseudo intellectuals there are some of the most cowardly, stupid, and annoying people you’re physically able to interact with.

    Participating in Reddit just isn’t worth it.

    @AlgoRythm as they say, subreddits are either awesome or awful. I suspect the percentage of the latter is 99+, but reddit has a _lot_ of subreddits…

    @djsumdog

    Thanks for the links. I read through both of your articles and yes, egregious. We two probably strongly disagree on the vaccines, but it should be allowed to be said and we should be allowed to have a heated debate on it.

    When did the quote,

    'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,' become a heterodox opinion, as you so aptly put it.

    Side note. I don't stand 100% behind the quote. I want everyone to say their piece, but I wouldn't defend it to my death. To mild social struggle, probably. Far more reasonable.

    > Arguing on Reddit.
    Well there’s your problem.

    Redditors by and large will not (and cannot) accept opposing viewpoints, let alone something that proves them wrong. These people also likely have a mental vested interest in refuting your claim, either because the indicated group did cheat (which makes women look bad, and by extension, those redditors themselves); or that the cheating itself is wrong (and if said redditors are also cheaters, they are thus guilty of something they cannot fix). So they see your argument as not just an argument, but as a personal attack, and they feel cornered and so lash out in desperate self-defense. Reddit itself is also built to encourage constructing (and protecting) echo chambers. In both ways, you are fighting a hopeless battle.

    @TrayKnots why? There would still be places where politics are discussed on purpose and people would go in ready for a political discussion.

    Why is it better to force people to talk about politics when and where they don't want to? You are just going to get a bunch of people that are going to close off, dismiss you or you gonna catch them off guard leading to nothing but heated and emotional reactions.

    How is this any better for democracy compared to just talking about politics at the right time and place with people that want to do it and are opened for a discussion?
  • 0
    @Hazarth

    Because those are the places with the staunchest defenders of an opinion. Those people invested.

    Look, if we put two political opinions on a spectrum. Only two parties, say democrats and republicans:

    D-------d--|--r--------R

    The pipe is the line where some would vote for the one or the other parties, the letters are example voters.

    In those political spaces, you will find D and R. The problem, d is actually closer to r than they are to D. And vice versa. But those two don't meet, or when they do, they agree not to speak about politics. They never even realize that this is the opinion of the other. For d, a republican looks like R. And for r, a democrat looks like D.

    This is what echo chambers do.

    That's the echo chamber argument. There is also the argument of democratic responsibility. Yet, I run out of characters. Tell me if you're interested.

    Anyway, the middle dies, we hate each other, we cannot speak to each other.

    people can just choose not to engage in political conversations if they're going on

    it makes no sense to ban it. people ban things instead of realizing they can just socially say no to a conversation if it's brought up. not every discussion has to be engaged with

    I remember I got banned from a discord because I had asked for IDE suggestions. the only suggestion given to me was vscode, by like 10 people. I said I didn't feel comfortable using Microsoft products, and the mod said I was bringing in politics. it's a dumb rule that gets mis-used as a sledgehammer against anything someone doesn't want to engage in, anything that triggers them

    and similarly it doesn't preclude companies from aligning themselves publicly with political causes, which makes it all very suspicious. strongarming on the basis of politics is ok, but discussing them is banned everywhere. bit suspicious. as a system would cause division and strife, because you can't hash out and see everybody is just people

    @jestdotty @TrayKnots "Do not discuss religion or politics." is short for don't do stupid shit that could get our server banned because the type of people who control/moderate discord is the same as reddit. Also, people who deeply care about religion/politics are often zealots/emotionally invested that will cause schisms in the group for reasons completely unrelated to the main goal of the group (playing a game). The fact they disallow heated topics is inherently part of democracy.

    Reddit is retarded though since it's meant to be "the face of the internet" then it should allow all discussions, but then advertisers pull funding (a big reason for the Draconian rules about content).

    Also it's often ego boosting to the these retards to block you after posting for the exact reason you said "I owned this guy and now he can't respond"
