Demolishun3799010dSometimes you want to go where Linux isn't lame...
From what I hear the non-sucky Ubuntu is Linux Mint. -
retoor849610d@Demolishun nah bs, it has custom repos. Its way better to stay on the regular Ubuntu, preferably xubuntu.
@kiki why not kubuntu with kde? You like that so much right? -
Demolishun3799010d@retoor I use Ubuntu at work. I hate that it has tiered downloads for security. You have to pay to get latest security updates.

why not arch? it's super easy and no bullshit
Instead of doing apt-get install you do yay -S. Update is sudo pacman -Syu
Use the archinstall script and you're golden -
kiki373349d@retoor I just couldn’t live with how ugly, fragmented and unpolished plasma was from UI design standpoint. Plus, it had weird graphical glitches.
Overall, I think that Debian’s stability is a myth propagated by people who either didn’t try Debian or are too scared because you’re not allowed to criticize Debian publicly.
I lost count of how many times Debian broke on me in such weird ways that I had to debug it with GPT-4.5 — cheaper models just weren’t enough. Debian is awfully inconsistent, and anything can break at any moment.
Right now I think that with GNU/Linux, there are two options: you either go with distros where everything was done for you, or you build everything from scratch. Between those two lays the uncanny valley of bad distros. -
kiki373349d@Demolishun you get regular updates as everyone else for free. You only have to pay for Ubuntu Pro if you want to, but it’s free for personal use. Ubuntu without Ubuntu Pro is as secure as any other mainstream distro

@kiki HA! I would NEVER run a prod server on ubuntu. Attack surface is just too large to even begin to comprehend it. I'd have to apt-purge AT LEAST half of preinstalled packages.
As for desktop use, it's probably OK, as the risk rating is rather low. -
kiki373349dUbuntu Server is very popular. The moment the default install has a hole, a lot of very smart people will get to patching it immediately. The update will be rolled out within hours, maybe even less than an hour. Ubuntu is a Big Deal, and Ubuntu security is a big deal too.
I agree with the attack surface argument, but every OS is targeted, and every OS will be broken sooner or later. A large team constantly monitoring security and rolling out patches is better at securing an OS than just myself alone. Betting on the OS being obscure enough to not get targeted because all hackers are working on hacking Ubuntu is just security by obscurity. -
retoor84969d@kiki everything what is not xubuntu is just crap. Accept that :) A minimal interface, offering all you need with no weird glitches. I have no idea what's wrong with xubuntu looks.

kiki373349d@retoor x doesn't support proper scaling for hdpi screens. it's a deal breaker for me. otherwise xfce is very nice indeed
I switched to ubuntu!
