@BadFox nah this one is a good one, for reasons I can't go into without giving away who I'm working for.
-
If I try to type faster than 60wpm the speed becomes a complex number, because some letters are imaginary and there is no order.
-
bmk0314156yI just retested myself after a long time and I was between about 80-90 depending on the test and how much of it was comprehensible sentences.
-
I'd be willing to bet most employers who test candidate's typing speed use utterly crap keyboards.
-
devios157016yI just tested myself because surprisingly I've never actually done that since I learned. 93 wpm with 91% accuracy. Not bad considering this keyboard is fucked and types extra letters on its oown.
Touch-typing ftw. -
musician6656yWho the hell does a typing test on a interview? I got 110 wpm on a test but that doesnt mean jackshit. The guy next to me with his 2 finger typing was still 2 times faster at coding.
Tbh even in customerservice it will be more important to have a good collection of snippets ready.
Btw congrats on your new job!:) -
@musician yeah it wasn't a big thing, just a quick, type this sentence in the box below, took like 39 seconds.
Apparently they had been lied to before by someone who it turned out was a hunt and peck type so couldn't document calls properly. -
fgysin3466ySince when is typing speed even a tiny bit relevant? If that is the limiting factor in your dev work you are
A) not using your IDE correctly (you shouldn't be typing boilerplate), and
B) not spending enough time THINKING about what you are actually doing. -
CodeBane7736y@fgysin I beg to differ, yeah for development typing speed may not mean shit but for debugging (I do SQL), you need to be able to have some sort of typing skill and also have good editing I.e. Changing words/lines/characters if you want to solve things in any reasonable time.
-
Fjord806yYou just reminded me of having this guy does real-time latex in a maths lecture, he shares notes with only minor typos right after the lecture...I don't even know how he draws diagrams that speedy the actual fk
-
I'll generally hit between 110 and 120 wpm on those online tests.
The only thing that means in practice is that I get pissed off watching Karen from HR across from me type at about 5 wpm using one finger that's hitting backspace most of the time. -
@AlmondSauce that's actually insanely high, but does that include correct punctuation, capitalisation and words you are u familiar with?
-
@seraphimsystems Includes correct punctuation and that's based on tests that ask you to type random bodies of text (so real passages of text with punctuation that I won't have read before.) Few wpm error rate not included in that figure, but hey no-ones perfect!
-
@AlmondSauce touch type I take it? No matter how hard I try I cannot get beyond two fingers on each hand plus thumb for space.
-
@seraphimsystems Depends what you mean by touch typing. I've never learnt the "proper" way to touch type by placing my hands in a certain place or anything like that, but I naturally tend to use all my fingers and don't need to look at the keyboard when typing.
I've always maintained playing musical instruments helps with this too. -
@seraphimsystems Yea... thought against that aft commenting... why would they measure typing speed...
-
RTRMS36906yI can type.way faster than that, with an accuracy rating of 0.
Hated fucking typing, we actually had it as a required subject at school, my final speed for the year was 7. My mother and I had a solid laugh at that. -
RTRMS36906y@electrineer predictive text, althout I can type faster and more accurately since my day job required keyboard usage for the last decade or so.
-
RTRMS36906y@electrineer oh hek no, this was like 18 years ago.
Thankfully typing code is a lot easier than typing paragraphs and crap -
I had to take a typing test for an interview, got a 73,and the lady there was super impressed. I guess there are some really bad typist.
-
@iSwimInTheC yeah I'm no touch typist but I'm no hunt and pecker.
I just bought a mechanical keyboard with blue switches (audible click) and am going to learn to touch type.
