I already did that and my boss caught me doing it and that made him angry. He even accused me of 'hogging the bandwidth and wasting company resources' and almost gave me an offense.
-
karma110506yReminds me of that time in my previous job where my apis were also blocked ... Hard to dev right?!
-
C0D4681386yWhat he hell? Just Use duck duck go and have the SO results show up in the search, you still win.
-
Maybe he wants real devs instead of copy/paste monkeys. Like the folks who built SO all without being able to look up shit on SO.
-
C0D4681386y@Fast-Nop even real devs need some help at times, mind you I’m yet to actually ask a question. If SO don’t have it I go back to the docs / drawing board anyway or just bash the keyboard till it sorts its self out.
-
@Zerocchi I used to spend a lot of time on SO answering questions. Sometimes up to 50% of my work hours was me lurking on SO. Of course there could be people answering questions in their free time, but I certainly wouldn't.
-
@C0D4 so, just how did they create SO? OK, they had Jon Skeet who can parse HTML using regexp, and otherwise is famous for being famous, but that will only bring you so far.
Not to mention that an awful lot of answers on SO are outdated, misleading or downright wrong, and that the code samples are mostly just for demonstrating a principle and not fit for production use (but that's where they do end up). -
C0D4681386y@Fast-Nop exactly, I didn’t say you had to copy/paste and put half assed code blocks into production.
As for how they created it, a lot of devs with a lot of experience in different areas, how did they do that, they read the docs, which is why I tend to find it interesting when I see people asking how to do X, but never look at the docs for X.
It’s usually the concept of the example that’s enough to get you moving on when you hit a road block, which is what stackoverflow is for, as far as I’m concerned, or you stumble across a bug in a major piece of software and you need a work around. -
When I am stuck, and the documentation does not help me out, the StackOverflow network is always a life saver. Blocking that is stupid.
But I agree, there are also questions from people who seem to think that asking on SO is quicker than reading up on the topic themselves.
And sometimes, RTFM is the only viable answer... -
devios157706y@Fast-Nop SO is for sharing knowledge and helping people figure out problems. It’s not meant for free labour. If a developer just copy-pastes code from SO without understanding what it does, they’re a terrible programmer and that’s on them, not Stack Overflow.

Who wastes money on developers-without-access-to-stackoverflow? Company must be going in loss!
-
robsbobs316yI'm a software and product director and have been a software manager. In my professional opinion... This guy is not just incompetant but is actively impeding development. Formally request a change to the policy in a strongly worded but respectful email. If that doesn't work then leave the company and do them a favour by informing them why in an exit interview
-
hoho just imagine how hard it would be for them to find a developer if this is written on glasdoor:
"StackOverflow is blocked. Do not recommend!" -
Here ya go. Let your boss go fuck himself :) https://github.com/gautamkrishnar/...
-
@ScriptCoded Doesn't the python script call stackoverflow api from the local machine itself?
-
I might look for a new job after a week or so but not able to use Stackoverflow made me read docs, try things and able to think by myself which is nice.
-
I did my intern at a firm that blocked StackOverflow. Though it took a while to get things done I still remember the work that I did there. ðŸ¤
At my present workplace no restriction at all. But the best part I always end up in SO questions that are not yet answered. 😂
Stackoverflow is fucking blocked from my company's internet. Fuck.
