AI is in the process of completely destroying the hobby of programming

What's even the point anymore. Just hit up the slop machine and generate some fucking worthless garbage like all of the other talentless, useless morons that don't know anything about anything. Cool! Really love that

I think I'm gonna stick mostly to game dev in the foreseeable future

unlike other art forms, nobody looks at the code 😔

was a problem at my job, too. doesn't matter how good or maintainable, or the non existence of bugs, or speed. all that matters is management gets to feel good about themselves (which includes you never being a full person, because that would make them feel bad to consider that)

Correct. While there's potential for good, we've already seen some parasites wanting to use it for nefarious purposes. Recent case in point: https[:]//www[.]nintendo[.]com/en-gb/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Dead-Gears-Space-of-War-3096874.html .

/* Yes, I have broken the link on purpose. */

Also, I, too, consider code an art form. It has to be good, though.

No, that's not true. You have preferences right on how to write code? The art is making it code exactly as you want and then it isn't slop. It's actually a huge challenge.

I made project specific agents that work better than claude and enforce my code style. It's hardcore development: https://pravda.education/posts/...

You produce more than ever but it's really challenging to do it good. I keep on learning.

@D-4got10-01 I also considered it as art form and it's very sad that AI is doing so well. But we can't fight it so we better join it. Good AI usage is a type of art as well. My project has an A for structure and that's really impressive with AI. Have you ever seen the docs page for pravda? It's almost more work than the site itself. But for good development it's really required. It's docs for agents.

@D-4got10-01 @whimsical I definitely agree on the code as art (or craftsmanship) part, and that's also why this pisses me off so much

I already hated normies streaming into computer science and coding because it was so overhyped on tiktok/instagram/youtube but now with AI its like 100x worse

Bunch of idiots sucking out all the air in the room just for us actual knowledgable but quiet devs to be drowned out

@12bitfloat > 'I already hated normies streaming into computer science and coding because it was so overhyped on tiktok/instagram/youtube but now with AI its like 100x worse'.

I remember when some video popped up in my feed w/ a title akin to "You're one [prompt|script] away from making $outrageous_sum_of_money!". Made me laugh, shudder, && pissed off all at the same time.

@D-4got10-01 Yeah that's the kind of video. I guess at the end of the day its all about money

That's why everything sucks now. And honestly it's also because the economy sucks. I think if people had a realistic path toward house ownership and stuff it would probably not be as bad. But everybody is just focused on the money, no matter if they have to scam, deceive or worse :(

@12bitfloat we totally agree, the normies destroy everything. Now we get even more of those of those people. But that is not the fault of AI. Please check the pravda platform btw. I would really appreciate a post. We are with ten people there now :)

I get the frustration, but I'd argue hand-built small stuff is exactly where the hobby still lives. I made a little math game called mathfinity by hand ( https://p32929.github.io/mathfinity ) - no generated slop, just fiddling with mechanics for fun. Game dev is a solid hill to stand on; nobody's automating the joy of "huh, that feel is wrong, let me tweak it."
