"Look. The bottle has a total of 40% alcohol. This shit is spread out evenly in the bottle. When I pour the bottle into a glass, my glass then has 40% alcohol.
No matter the size of the glass, any amount of this whiskey has 40% alcohol at ALL times."
Give or take a few words, depending on what they'll comprehend. -
Pour 40% of the bottle into a big glass and it should be obvious that the glass contains clear pure alcohol and the bottle is now just brown whisky juice.

I see your friend didnt do well on chemistry lessons in school and doesnt know what is concentration. Next idea: ask him what is heavier 1kg steel or 1kg feathers and have fun :D

cripi11266y(Just) explain the meaning of % to them. Percent translates to unites per one hundret since cent is just another form of one-hundredth.
So therefore your whisky contains 40 units of alcohol per 100 units of drink in total.
They need to remember that percent is not a absolut value, but rarther a relative value wich describes the relation of some values.
What you're doing when pooring some of it in a glass, you're realy just changing the size of a unit.
If I have 40L alcohol in 100L of drink is the same relative amount (same percentage) as 40ml in 100ml but not the same absolute amount. -
This stack of 10p coins is 75% copper and 25% Nickel. If I give you one it is also 75% copper and 25% Nickel.

abkcode3016y@irene They think bottle having 40% alcohol makes them high, but a glass doesn't. so a glass has less % of alcohol. They are confused bcoz they related it to getting high.

cursee165956yBottle has 40% of alcohol sounds like your bottle only has .40 liter if it was a 1L bottle.
Bottle has liquid with 40% alcohol volume. Hence when pour into glass or cup or your mouth or your eye or your naval, there will still be liquid with 40% of alcohol volume.
Wikipedia : Alcohol volume (ethanol volume) is defined as the number of millilitres of pure ethanol present in 100 milliliters of solution at 20°C (68°F). -
Kaji20976yEh, I can see a case where someone may think of it like a bottle of orange juice. 60% of the bottle may be luscious, delicious pulp, but unless you shake it you end up with some orange water for the first glass and perfection at the bottom of the bottle.
Which is a fancy way of saying they may be seeing it as a heterogeneous solution rather than a homogenous one. -
rantbook7326yWooow, OP, the investment you could get from them form if you play card games and bet money...
-
Pretend you add one drop of a very powerful poison in it and ask him to drink a glass.
If he still does not get it, he's beyond salvation.
