If you didn't became a developer what would you be? What's your plan B?

Mine is to be a psychologist.

Also psychologist, or maybe an aircraft pilot (that isn't realistic, is it?), something that gives you some kind of challenge and satisfaction that you accomplished something. But I haven't put much thought into this, since I'm pretty sure I won't be doing anything else

Nice choice, psychology was my first dream career, when I was a teenager. I don't know if I would have enough patience, though.

My plan B is to be a designer.

Knitwear designer 😂 unfortunately it's a hard business to make it big in so it remains a plan B.

    I can't do anything else.

I went all in on this path.

    Anything that’s related to computer

    Carpenter

@vocuzi I'd love that. I really would like to try to make some beautiful furniture, but I have no space for a woodworking shop. 😣

I'd probably still be my previous career, chemist. Either polymer research or pharma. Or my job before that, aerospace QA, working on xray NDT.

    But I like development better.

I also often wish creative artistic stuff was easier for me, I wish it could be part of my career. I've spent countless hours using tools like blender, fx studio, photoshop, etc... But the end result always comes out a bit malformed.

Something in public transportation. Planning or riding a tramway or train sounds good to me.

If I couldn't work in any computer-related field anymore, I'd probably run a stationery/office supplies shop.

Mechanical engineer - creating real, tangible stuff - or a furniture upholsterer.

    A Software Therapist I guess 🤔
  • 3
Yeah I would’ve been a therapist in psychology

Nice.... Even I would want to become a psychologist! It's very interesting!

I think I might be a cook. Cooking is the oldest way of programming I think. Although I would opt not to be destroyed by todays food industry. Those dudes work somehow 10 to 12 hours a day and have a huge shit load of physical work todo. A small restaurant with some people handling the customers and I can just create food in peace and with my music. :D Oh and fuck availability. We would have a fixed amount of portions and thats it. This calculation of how many customers come in in average and blabla I´d like to avoid.

Biology has always intrigued me so maybe I would study that. I would probably just end-up combining the two and do something like biotech.

Without studies? Then I would be doomed.

    Maybe teacher

Animator. Choosing between that and engineering/Dev was really difficult.

Started out on track for NASA payload specialist. Then life with dyscalculia happened. Couldn’t do math in my head quickly enough to be an astronaut and keep track of numbers in my memory, so computers it was. If I were to choose another career, genetics has always fascinated me because DNA is essentially a bunch of nanobots using a biological programming language.

First, I wanted to be an astrophysicist, but screw the theoretical stuff, I want practical stuff.
Then I wanted to become a medic... same fucking thing...
Then I wanted to join the navy... but got rejected...

Then I started turning my interest for helping people into developing practical (/usable) apps.

I'm not a developer in a professional sense (yet). I'm currently doing my new plan B as an engineer in manufacturing.

Plan A is to get a developer job ASAP.

    Wanted to be a biologist

I had a lifeguarding summer job before I started studying ccomputer science. I probably would have ended up being a paramedic.
  • 4
UI/UX Designer. Dream would be blacksmith or architect/draftsman though
  • 3
Probably I would end up as a paramedic.

It's my hobby at the moment so I know that I would like it.
  • 3
Mathematics... but thats just coding in a different language :D

I'm learning both sysadmin and electronics mainly for the sake of knowing both software and hardware, but I guess it's also a bit of a redundancy?

Redundancy.. I should definitely keep going for sysadmin as a career XD

Being a developer is already my B plan.

I wanted to be an astrophysics.

Wondered about it as I grow to hate comp/tech more and more I'm involved in it and realized there is no way out, as the comp/tech is the only thing I know because I have not devoted myself to anything else for the last 20 years.

A friend of mine was saying that a person with hobbies the same as his main job is really poor. Guess I'm starting to realize why.

    @Hesh good luck!
  • 2
@ThermalCube your hobby is being a paramedic? Are you out at night, crawling thru the streets looking out for any poor soul in request of help?

    Oh... that was a code for « super-hero ».
