When the company you work for buy you a laptop, do you take it home or leave it at the office? If you take it home, do you use it as a personal laptop for side projects for example?

If need be, I take it home as the vpn back in is windows domain based.

As for side projects, it's probably wise not too, or at least read the fine print in your contract around intellectual property for software you create.

If a company buys you a laptop - they most likely assume that you are going to take it home and do some other coding on it too (serious stuff, no porn or crap)

I take my company owned laptop home, in case I decide to work remotely the next day, or, more likely, in case the trains are fucked again.

I'm very careful about not using it for personal stuff, it's the company's property and they can access it at any time they want to.

Most employment contracts include a clause that says anything you create using company resources belongs to the company. This obviously includes company-owned hardware. Check your contract, company handbook, or whatever legal documents you agreed to when you were hired.

However, I'm 90% certain you were given a laptop for the express purpose of working remotely. That 10% of doubt is in case your company is stupid, and requires all work to be done on site, under the leering gaze of management.

At my place they typically issue laptops but only for the corporate network. It's good of your an office admin and want to work from home but as a tech who can't connect any of their gear to the corporate network it's only useful if I want to put my time sheet in once a month. It's also much slower than the microATX computers takes up more space since it has a tiny monitor and I use a KVM. But your allowed to take them home for business use.

I will never trust machine's from work for personal use, they can put any spyware on that for what I know.

Yeah i brought mines home for a while and used it for personal projects/youtube/netflix but I avoided the shady parts of the internet mostly because they can check my history.

But I repaired my own laptop so no need anymore for that!

I bring it home whenever I feel like I might work from home the next day, and NEVER use it for personal projects unless I don't care that the IP becomes my employers.
Most contracts make any IP created with any use of company resources (including your time at standard working hours) company property, always be mindful of this, especially if you hope to cash in on any of these projects at any point in your life

Work laptop is for work, nothing else.
I customize the laptop extensively, and I occasionally take them home and work from there. but no side projects unless i'm building them for work to use, and have approval to retain ownership of said side project.
