Just bought a new, cheap laptop for travel purposes.
It turns out I cannot start Windows 10 without giving Microsoft my phone number or an email. And the installator asks me if I agree to allow the apps to use „advertisement id”. It doesn’t ask if I like rough pegging.
Luckily, there’s a lot of temp e-mail solutions and I happen to have internet access on my other devices.

Then I have to spend 20 minutes uninstalling all the crap Asus preinstalled on MY computer. Seriously, when did I order „Asus Giftbox” or McAfee virus? The Asus-crap deinstalator displays a screen where I am asked to create an Asus account.

Question to apple funboys: is the experience the same when you buy a new Mac?

A lot of stores offer clean windows installations I believe

And you can always try gnu/linux

It just wants a windows account (Hotmail/live) so all its cloud and home phoning can be tracked back to an individual account.

Disconnect from the internet and you'll be able to Create an offline account (local) but it will eventually trick you into Logging into a traceable account at some point.

If you don't want Ms knowing who you are, don't use Windows.
If it's a cheap ass laptop, install Linux so it will at least run.

You can install online without an account, but in older Windows 10 versions this option was hidden behind "Forgot password" or something like that. Most recent update has it clearly presented.

Since the May 2019 update the OOBE screens clearly allow you to select a local account. In older versions, like on my laptop, the option appears only if you are offline. That’s scammy. I bet thousand of users were lured to create Microsoft accounts.

I probably don't qualify as an "apple funboy" because I have a work-issued MacBook Pro and iPhone 8, and I just view and use them as tools. Literally no feelings whatsoever for these devices.

Still, no the experience is not the same. Crapware doesn't exist in that sense. But it does "encourage" you to sign up for an Apple/iCloud account. Then you're encouraged to also link your iPhone to it. And only use things from inside Apple's walled garden. And adapters, please buy more adapters.

It's almost a Borg-like assimilation process. Except resistance isn't futile, so I stopped after linking the iPhone.

Apple is absolutely a better user experience and ecosystem than Windows. It's more secure and ostensibly more privacy-conscious, too.

But if you're up for it, Linux will still do all of these (except ecosystem) better, more customizably, and much much more cheaply.

@groxx Apparently some Macbook Airs have cooling fans that literally aren't connected to anything. (Source: recent Louis Rossman video)

@Root Comparing MacOs to Linux is like comparing C# to assembler.
Yes, sure, Linux could do everything macOS does. After weeks of tweeking, configuring etc. And it will never be as stable as MacOS.
Just LOOK at all necessary steps just to set up SMS sync (Which will probably fail once every 10 sms): https://maketecheasier.com/send-rec...
Do you expect average user to do that? Average user should NEVER see a terminal during PC setup/usage

As for windows, I find it way better than MacOS. It is not as customizable as Linux, but most of things work out of box.

@NoToJavaScript Someone on devRant asked for input. As they're posting here, on a site built specifically for developers, I can safely assume they're intelligent and fluent enough in tech to not be an "average user." If they are, they're in the wrong place and should expect advice that exceeds their understanding and abilities.

    Play nicely @Root.
Not all devs are above average usage, there's some wild cards out there 🙁

@Root, It's always "fun" trying to teach people how to use basic things in a terminal or even setup basic environments.

I get they like to code, they get paid to do it even, but how do they not know how to do "x" or even look it up and find pages upon pages of instructions😞
