Very true, I was going off looks but now I get your original meaning. Out of curiosity what was the theme or distro they said to download

@donkeyScript Prof knows my friend and I use linux and (I think) assumed we were using Windows-like GUI's, and he was recommending the class to install Linux on their computer for coding in C for the class. So he asked us what GUI we use.
We responded that we use the Window Manager i3, and that it's basically just terminals, with vi/vim/emacs or IDE for heavy programming assignments
I don't think he knew what to make of it, but he told the class that there exist GUI's that basically look like/emulate windows GUI's, and to install those
I mean, I don't know about normal people, but it isn't too hard to use Unity/Gnome and most windows-emulating GUI's for linux are ugly

I tend to like either WM or more macOS-like desktop environments rather than Windows.

@Insidious Plasma is probably the best one for a compromise between linux-windows for a newcomer
I'd probs recommend kubuntu or something
something like Zorin is nasty though -
@Insidious Yeah, I tend to like brighter contrasts. I do like a good solarized environment. White backgrounds, eh.

IMHO, windows GUI is sorta ugly; 7 was just massive, a little over the top with the glass, later in there was too many colors. Recently I've actually enjoyed older style, gray, rectangle themes, like in the nineties (Raheleigh, ThinIce, etc)
