    If mobility is not a stringent requirement, go for a desktop - much easier to get powerful parts and cool them adequately (especially for intensive workloads such as ML).
    Bonus: you can actually pick a good gaming monitor, so you can enjoy your games and get shit done too.

    Look for a high-tier ryzen 3xxx and nvidia gpu, nvme ssd, fast ram, and decent air cooling.

    Also, heavy laptops become awfully painful to carry around on your back if you're not very fit (like me), and if you're gonna keep them plugged in most of the time you're just gonna destroy a battery for no good reason.

    @endor ok if we consider mobility for the next 1.5 2 years

    Msi will give you more laptop for the money in gaming.

    Desktop is better.

    If you need the mobility or want to have some mobility, but want to game hard (AAA games), grab an MSI, cheaper and similar specs as AlienWare.

    Cooling can be an issue if you punish it hard enough, but you can always grab a decent fan stand and cool it that way, I've only had a couple of games need the additional airflow (EA can punish you at times)

    Plus it will still have the specs needed to run VMs and anything else you like.

    @M1sf3t what lenovo ? Because im thinking of y740 and it seems ubuntu has issues with the lenovo y family
  • 0
    @M1sf3t no worries man. it's all about whatever works

    @M1sf3t used to fix laptops in college, lenovo thinks sandwiching the motherboard between two plastic parts and holding it all together with 5 screws is a good design choice

    @theKarlisK thanks I think im gonna go with the legion Y740. I still have 2 days to think about it

    @theKarlisK yeah, dells have 7 trillion fucking screws (even the newer ones), but never had any issue with them.

    Ive also never seen a legion with non-broken fan covers.

    @M1sf3t get a case or some shit tbh

    @shes-coding
    Not crazy about the build quality or thermal management of the legion laptops, but they're alright at the price.

    I will say I have my x1 extremes at work running arch with no problems, so you can probably cut over with your legion if you want to with very few headaches.

    I'd say go with a Y740 as mobility issue would make you regret someday

    Don't know if HP still does it...

    But maybe asking nice helps.

    HP offers - when you ask nicely - customized builds to professionals.

    It takes time and yes you will have to so some calls and take some time....

    But you'll get the possibility to build your own Laptop with full guarantees. Only downside: it takes it's time.

    The last one I ordered was an Elitebook 840 G1 with a lot of more bling (better Display / connectivity / RAM...)

    Still running today. My favorite

    I'm a newbie - would the legion y540/740 be better than the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 7?

    @SortOfTested is there any specific msi that you'd recommend?
  • 1
    @idkwhattobuy
    GS series is great, pretty much any of them. I used them for years until we had to care about client presentation.
  • 0
    @SortOfTested that's something i have to care about
  • 0
    @m0nk
    Then objectively, don't get anything on your list.
  • 0
    @SortOfTested the legion looks professional doesnt it?
  • 0
    @m0nk
    It looks gamer chic. Big pandery LEGION emblazoned on the side, weird angles, giant exhaust, rgb all the things. Will definitely lose points with clients.
  • 0
    @SortOfTested hmmm will definitely think about it thanks
  • 1
    Honestly if you want to present to clients, just get an old beat up macbook, slap in ssd and ram, put on some skin to hide the damages and done, 500$ tops

    @yellow-dog I'm not a fan of Apple products. I feel they get on my nerves for some reason I am a Linux user for 8+ years now I don't think I'll move away from that.

    On another note I got the Legion Y740. Just bought it. I've never regreted getting lenovo products, as I have been attached to Lenovo products for 5+ years now and I've never been let down. Let's hope it stays that way.
