Am I only one thinking that Linux is kind ok cliche among programmers. Some of them brag about using Ubuntu over Windows like it makes you a better programmer. I have seen brilliant Windows developers and shitty Linux developers. My point is not that Windows is better, just stop bragging that you are using Ubuntu, it does not make you smart or better than others.

Yeah the simplest and most Windows-like Linux

There seems to be a school of thought that the harder your OS is to use, the better your applications will be and people LOVE to praise Linux when really I struggle to believe it gives many people an edge over Windows developers.

The trick with Linux is that everything is debuggable, kernel included, and with custom WMs it makes building customized workflows a productivity booster.

@drRoss For me it's just that Linux is more convenient for me. Not only the shell, imho some Linux desktop environments are plain superior in terms of usability and looks.
Then there are the quicker system updates without reboot and many other details which make it less frustrating.

I don't think I'm a better dev with Linux, but I feel better using it. And that's important too when you're using a computer that much.

I think to use Linux as your main OS makes you a better programmer if what you build ends running on a Linux machine. You can use OS level stuff (like services management) instead of build a solution from scratch.

Of course, if the stuff that you build ends running on a Windows machine better to know about Windows.

I used to believe that Linux is better than Windows. I'm not sure anymore. What I know is that I'm a Windows ignorant person.

Use best tool for the job. And try not to suck. That's all there is to it.

@GnoeJuan Ubuntu is not that heavy, with windows and Ubuntu installed on same system, assembleRelease took 3min to build my android app on Win8.1(anti-virus in consideration) and same app 7s on my Ubuntu 16.10. Which is better? You decide!

For the work you have to do. I use Ubuntu and windows both, mostly at the same time and would miss both of them.

@GnoeJuan The LTS(long-term support) releases are supposed to be more stable.

It also depends on your system. In my experience you'll have more luck with desktop hardware while laptops etc. can cause more problems, especially with wifi.

The right OS it's the one that you like to use (it comes from "close to the heart" as the Rush guys already said)...

IMO Linux was just less resource heavy on laptops than Windows. I'm a Windows fan, but I developed on Android Studio on Linux and Windows and it was much faster working on Linux than Windows. So it doesn't makes you a better programmer, just makes it more productive.

IMO Ubuntu is a noob distro so I'd imagine Ubuntu and windows users to be on a par with each other, tbh. A dev who uses arch, gentoo, freebsd etc I would assume to be a much better and experienced developer due to the sophisticated nature of the tools they use. IMO. I am unashamedly biased but its like the difference between building a game in scratch or c#.

@wonderlander FreeBSD isn't even Linux. That's a very odd assumption to make... You use Linux so you must be a better developer... Crazy thought.

Linux is great. But if I'm allowed to go on a real rant: *some* Linux users are the hipsters of the nerd world. Picked Linux cause all the cool kids (programmers, in this case) are doing it. barely finished their first programming course and learned the ls/pwd/mv commands but they already bought Tux penguin merch. Like those kids who wear Ramones t-shirts but don't know their songs. They claim Linux makes them more effective but in reality all they do is try a new distro every week, struggle for hours with command line for tasks they could do faster in a GUI cause it makes them feel like hackers, bandwagon jokes about how dumb Windows/Mac users are...instead of actually programming.

Wow, I sound so bitter... so let me end by saying I love most of the Linux community in general and use Linux myself sometimes.

@jiraTicket Reminds me of a teacher back in school. He used every opportunity to bash Apple and Microsoft and to praise the open community in Linux etc. and constantly bragged about what he can do with his Linux netbook.

Then a few years later my cousin got the same teacher and told me he uses a Macbook now...

But yeah which OS you use doesn't define how good you code.

@jiraTicket I am still struggling with Linux sometimes but I didn't used it because it is cool or feels like hacking. My raspberrypi was fun and I try to learn new things... I hope I am not a hipster :/...

@J4s0n Learning is fine, everyone struggles. The hipsters are those who are too quick to dismiss all other systems else and start wearing Linux gear before barely using it.
