Never had the situation to give advice to a new dev. But I have an idea anyways: Give that dev a problem, which is above beginner level and watch the dev. If the dev rage quits and doesn't want to try again, then the new dev will not be happy with the job. But if the dev achieves to collect all knowledge to handle the problem, even if the solution is not the most elegant way, then the dev will have fun with the profession.

    This exact scenario is how I got a chance to be a developer in the first place, and our department wasn't even really interested in even having developers in the first place
