If you follow the evolution of life all the way back to the dawn of time, at some point something started to count and hoard possessions, this eventually lead to math, which lead to doing math faster, which lead to programming, which lead to AI.

I don't think 1 "person" can be attributed to the creation of counting things.

Charles Babbage is supposedly responsible for computers - so this guy?

The mainstream, textbook answer is Ada Lovelace who programmed Babbage's machine. Although I think this is kinda disputed.

She might just be the first programmer in the same vein of Columbus being the first ever human to discover America.

Programming languages aren't actually created, they're discovered. However, they're often not found to be useful until much later.

Clojure was actually the first language, found in a cave in Texas in 1847. However, no-one really knew what to do with it until over 100 years later.

Serious answer - agree it's probably Lovelace. Compiled languages are easier to answer for - that was Hopper.

Modern programming language? John Backus and his team at IBM created Fortran in 1957 as a "formula translator" for scientific computations.

Theory behind them? A bunch of people invented various bases of computation, the most famous of which are probably Alan Turing's Turing machine, Church and Rosser's lambda calculus, and Haskell Curry's combinator calculus (there were others who also worked on this, like Godel and so on).

Not that Fortran was particularly based on any of the above, it took a while for languages to be put on solid theoretical ground.
