Linux is free, if you don’t value your time

and if you do - it's also free regardless.

"free" has at least two meanings.

Windows is (for) free if you get it as gift AND don't value your time.

macOS costs money.

You get what you pay for.

Linux is awesome, but there is of course a steep learning curve.

Then, you will learn that many things you cannot do easily on Windows (because of poor design) and maybe MacOS (because of OS restriction) that can be done with 2 commands on the terminal.

Also, it's free and evolving really fast.

@HiFiWiFiSciFi Running on the HW I choose would be a big thing that Linux can do and macOS can't. Or where are Macs with Ryzen instead of outdated Intel garbage? Not to mention the ridiculously overpriced SSDs or RAM just because Apple made things incompatible on purpose.

@HiFiWiFiSciFi try mac OS on embedded devices and see how well it works.

Btw, I know MacOS is neat and very user friendly, very cool for some applications, but it is definitely not always the right tool for the job.

As for the money?

I bought my current daily driver iMac for $3800 in 2015.

I have since made over $500K with it.

These aren't just computers to me, these are investements.

And I could STILL sell my old iMac [checks] for close to 2 grand.

@HiFiWiFiSciFi ESP32 runs some RTOS, not Linux, because even Linux is too big.

I know, and with the new ARM Macs, tons of SW won't work properly anymore (let's see how good Rosetta 2 will be in reality), and bootcamp won't work anymore either.

I'm happy with my self-built PC that has exactly what I wanted, and no, it wouldn't run macOS, not even as Hackintosh.

But the best thing? I don't depend on Apple or Apple's OS updates. I can use any Linux distro I like. I'm also looking forward to my AMD laptop.

I AM bummed about loss of Bootcamp... but I wouldn't 100% count that out yet.

Windows does make OEM versions of Win10 for ARM... so it's really just a licensing issue between Apple and MS.

@HiFiWiFiSciFi ARM Windows is worthless crap because unlike Apple, MS can't dictate the hardware and thus has to actually compete against x86 PCs.

MS fails to understand this and thinks they can make money with ARM devices now while in reality, they would have to subsidise them heavily. Same kind of failure as with Windows phones. Too little, too late, too timid.

Nobody cares about ARM Windows, nobody buys the devices, that's why native SW is lacking, and that's why nobody buys the devices.

@HiFiWiFiSciFi ... on top of that, Apple's Rosetta 2 is claimed to do the ISA translation at installation time. So that will take long (also on every application update), but if that actually works, running the applications won't suck. That's different from Rosetta 1 where the new CPUs were a lot faster than the old ones so that emulation was OK.

MS? First, they can only emulate 32 bit Windows applications as of now. Second, it's at runtime. That's why the lack of native SW is a serious drawback which would also apply to a possible ARM bootcamp.

Your best way out will likely be buying a Windows PC if you need Windows applications. With all the Windows bloat, you'll want a more powerful processor anyway.

Oh and btw., I've been using Win 7 for 10 years and now switched back to Linux because I just won't waste my time with fucking Win 10.

While Windows has become much worse, desktop Linux has actually improved a lot - to the point where I install it for non-IT family members because I won't waste my time on their Win 10 either. Guess what, they like Linux, even as first time users.

@gibus I put the LibreOffice icon right on the desktop. Ever since MS Word was ribboned, LO is easier to use anyway. Besides, it's very rare that someone actually buys MS Office for private use.

Nothing is free in this world, you either gotta 'Win' that shit or "Nix" it before you jinx it. Choice is yours as always.
