School: Do you want to learn programming?
Me: Yes.
School: Do you want to learn about operation systems and networks?
Me: Yeah, sounds cool.
School: Do you also want to learn basic electrophysics?
Me: But I will rarely need it if I become a SE.
School: Well too bad!

For me:

School: Do you want to learn programming?
Me: yes!
School: well too bad. We don't have the capacity to teach that :) you can learn physics though
Me: I'll take that... I guess. I can learn at home :(

Learned mechanical physics and electrical physics at school for 3 years on a plain level (memorize the formulas). Then on BSc CS had to learn for two more academic years mechanics and electro magnetism on academic level (derivation and proof)
Never used it since... ;_;

College: ok. Here, this is how washing machines work in a nutshell (true story)

School: you want to learn about programming, software engineering, web development, databases, compiling, project management, typesetting, game development, video creation,... (the list goes on)
Me: yes, for sure.
School: we'll teach you some of these a bit... And lots of marketing too...
Me: when will I ever need marketing?
School: ...

The things i will really need I have to learn by myself.

In my case, in short its like:
School - Do you want to learn programming, web development, game development, project management and become a software engineer later on?
Me - Yes!
School - Well then learn Physics, Chemistry and Maths hard and be really good at it.
Me - *completely loses faith in education system*

School: you to write programs on paper.

Grow up... You misunderstood what degree is about. Not knowledge, not interests, but compliance.

GPA is the best indicator or proof you will do whatever your boss ask you to do, even you have no interest or benefit in it.

Put simply, imagine you are in the army. shut up and be ready for the next exam.
