I find it annoying when non-tech savvy people criticize the Parler devs for using AWS because "it's Amazon they had it coming", I don't know the devs or company behind that website, I've never used it, but wtf man do you have any idea what's involved in building, deploying and maintaining a platform like that or any other similar? ffs you would barely be able to write an HTML blog by yourself and you dare judge devs for using AWS. fuck off.

I agree with the sentiment, it sucks, if my platform was removed from AWS I probably would keep it that way because I don't have the money to afford the hardware nor am I somewhere that's readily available and that's what is really sad it would suck that just because Amazon doesn't like you or you don't have the influence to fight it you and your userbase can go fuck off. Very bad precedent, it is discouraging.

The cloud is convenient, but it comes with tradeoffs.

This is why you have a multicloud redundancy, if one goes down, enable the next. But this shit show wouldn't have worked for parlor specifically anyway.

Google pulled the plug too, which means Google cloud was off limits.

They may have been able to jump to azure, but the question is for how long before MS jumped on the band wagon.

The trouble with high scalability is, you need to play by their rules or go without.

No business would sink billions into achieving the same scalability with their own hardware, that's kinda how These 3 win the war, they dropped the $$$ and reak the rewards by being able to sell it all off with millions of businesses footing the Bill.

@C0D4 The thing is that the cloud markets itself as a replacement for your own physical infrastructure. With this sort of situation, this couldn't be further from the truth. I am not a Parler fan. I wouldn't have joined that site even if I could have now, but if this sort of thing continues with other sites, I think the cloud providers are going to start losing some customers who would've been all-in on their cloud otherwise.

Basically, alienate enough customers, and even goliaths have gone down.

However, cloud providers dropping support over what is apparently ideological differences with their customers is worrying indeed.

As devs, we should support freedom of expression and do everything we can to stand up to censorship, lest the tools we build become the tools of oppression, corruption, and spite.

Well, you just can't rely on US companies for mission-critical infrastructure when your business is about porn, investigative journalism, being the competition of some big US corp, publishing pentagon leaks - or hosting uncensored forums it seems.
US companies will instantly break all contracts and burn all bridges for the most flimsy reasons. Sometimes it even is just the current president not liking your country or some other customers being upset about porn...
And Parler might also have been a criminal enterprise (or not, i really don't know).

So if not the devs, at least the CEOs should have known about the inherent risk of relying on US-based services - even if you are US-based too.
You just can't predict the next presidential fart or twitter shit storm convincing big corps to shut down your infrastructure.

@Root actually anecdotally for what that’s worth, my uncle said in the 70’s that liberals talked exactly how you did. And looking up the definition of liberalism not to mention of also the word liberal and you can see how the ideology came about. Perhaps the common thread is that it’s a mindset that aims to protect the minority from the majority in a democracy. It this mindset has resorted to more and more government power to achieve this (my way or the highway). I think libertarianism is the offshoot for people getting off the gov power train while retaining freedom to express without government forcing expression or in-expression. As a side note I just read a quora where a self proclaimed modern liberal justified “shouting down” people who’s arguments are not worthy of respect, of course as determined by the said person. I've been booted off Aruba Cloud earlier for "suspected abuse". I had 3 VPS's there that reverse proxied my internal services to the internet.
