You never ever assume things that aren't logically necessary.
The only assumption you can make regarding a family tree is that any biological parent must be older than its children.

There can be people with one biological parent.
There can be people with three biological parents.
As a looser form of cloning there can be people with two male or two female biological parents.
As of today there cannot be people with no biological parents, and that's scifi enough to assume as a design constraint.
