WHY THE FUCK ARE CODECS STILL A THING?

Have we as a society not moved on and found like the 4/5 "good enough" movie formats. Fucking bullshit needing me to download VLC for the first time in years -.-

AND WHY THE FUCK ARE CODECS ON SALE ON MICROSOFT STORE???? WHAT?

    K-lite pack, anything that doesn't play with that, ain't worth the time really.

    h.265 released in the last few years was like, 50% better at compression, so... Why they're being sold? All the good ones are free. No fucking clue.

    I don't think the problem is the amount of codecs that are around, but rather some of the licencing and parenting hell

    Make it public domain, make it an RFC or ISO norm even, I beg you

    @atheist H.265 isn't supported on a lot of phones by default (without VLC, which means it's software decoding, which breaks down a lot on mobile.) These same phones are pretty much always the ones you can't root yet as well.

    @atheist the quality is a little shittier though and many applications doesn't like the h265 format yet. For example Plex TV

    @fjrevoredo IIRC h265 should give equivalent quality to 264 with the right settings, the main difference is increased range of motion described
