Hazarth95123ynote from a smartass: you're right, you don't have to listen or read anyone. So just don't, you don't really need a button for it, just self control
-
sariel85313y@Hazarth there's some users on here that are obnoxious with the content they make.
At the very least, show who posted a rant so I can actively avoid them. -
Hazarth95123y@sariel I agree that it would be useful if we could set up custom views with both whitelist and blacklists for tags, that would be an awesome feature.
regarding blocking or hiding specific people, this is not a popular opinion, I know that, but I'm going by the rule that even a broken clock is right twice a day. Even people I disagree with can sometimes throw in some value for me, maybe accidentally even.
I also think those features just shadow-segregate communities leading to decline in content overall. but that's just a work in progress hypothesis
Showing usernames or avatars at the main screen might be the optimal solution, probably just usernames cause avatars might create too much clutter on the main screen
I do have a minor note on that too though. Having the messages appear anonymous does protect the posts from assumptions and judgement before even reading them. -
Hazarth95123y@sariel
What I do is just skim the post with my eyes for keywords and I know if I'm interested or not in like 2 seconds per post. Not like I have anything better to do since I'm scrolling devrant, right? -
nitnip18143yNo. If your first thought upon seeing/reading something you don't like is "where's the block button?!" you should just go back to twitter. It's more suited for users like you.
No one is forcing you to "listen" (read) what you don't like. Are you sure this isn't simply you going "I don't want to accidentally find myself agreeing with a rant posted by an user I don't like?" -
Blocking as in "not receiving notifications for their mentions"?
If you just want to not see their posts & comments, browser extension seems best way. -
@nitnip in larger, more active communities, it helps if there are a few people who post A LOT and it's all meme content you don't want to see. You block a couple of people who never post anything you want to read and your feed is cleaner as a result.
But I suppose DevRant is small enough that you don't really need it. No DMs so you don't need to block those, and I don't think there are any people who post often enough to be persistently annoying. -
sariel85313y@nitnip most people on here I can deal with.
One user in particular is so obnoxious and offensive I don't even want to fucking think about them.
They post so often though, that it just makes me not get on here because I just don't want to feel like shit.
I come here to vent about tech and work shit, not to be personally attacked. -
@Hazarth since we don’t have a header that states author, it is hard to not read at least first bullshit post. Believe me, I don’ t read the rest of bullshit. What I want is really easy though, a client side modification is enough.
-
@nitnip no. There is only one person that I want to block. He is writing with a broken english and using this website to broadcast his shitty haikus. Don’t make this an issue about fearing ideas.
-
@ostream i am a good developer meaning I don’t dirty my hands with peasant web development.
-
sariel85313y@Hazarth @aviophile I'm actually surprised that the mods haven't banned them since anyone who calls this person out on their bullshit is labeled as a pedophile or rapist.
-
nitnip18143yI fail to see how you are not blowing this out of proportion.
It's not like I haven't seen rants I don't agree with or rants that make me cringe or worse, shitty meme reposts.
I just hit dislike and move on. You could just write a script to block (hide) comments made by the user in question. Quite easy to do using xpath and vanilla js. -
sariel85313y@nitnip I don't use the dislike unless it's content I dislike. I hate to demerit someone based on the actual person.
If that's not the typical use-case then I can totally use dislike way more often. -
nitnip18143y@sariel ...so you dislike everything this user posts but you won't hit the dislike button because you feel you'd be disliking the person rather than the posts? How nitpicky.
Any way to block/ignore certain bullshitters? Just blocking the threads is enough.
Note for smartasses: freedom of speech is not equal to having to listen.
