Governments have, quite literally, no incentive to do their jobs well, so they don’t.

They’re like CEOs without a board of directors capable of firing them. They set their own salary, give themselves bonuses on a whim, and get paid regardless of how the company (in this case: country) is doing. They’re untouchable except by rebellion. Only in this case, the people suffering are citizens, not employees, and they can’t leave and find another country.

Here in the US, the idea was to keep politicians in check by having three separate branches of government with different goals, and to give ultimate power to the people to vote the poor politicians out. However, corrupt people working together across branches mitigates the first, and election fraud prevents the second.

When the citizens fear and serve the government instead of the reverse, you know your country is doomed.
