*You can't make this shit up*

Recruiter: Hi, I saw your profile on LinkedIn and I think I have a great programmer opportunity for you today! Can you tell me a little bit about your experience?

Me: Sure, I mostly work with JavaScript and C# and have several years of experience in designing, developing, and deploying enterprise-level applications in production environments.

Recruiter: Hmm, um OK. Have you ever created programs using InDesign or Microsoft Word?

Me: Excuse me?

Recruiter: You know, anything like pamphlets or event brochures?

Me: Are you talking about physical paper programs such as those that accompany events/conferences?!

Recruiter: Yes! What else would I be taking about?

Me: I'm in the software development industry, so I thought you were talking about programming in that context.

Recruiter: Oh no! Those positions are for the men, sweety. I mean, I wouldn't expect any women to know that other techy stuff...

*Hangs up*

    What the fuck is wrong with the world? (Excuse my language, but I was being nice here)
  • 26
    Wow, it's so unfortunate that some people continue to have that mindset.
  • 13
    I'm totally and absolutely shocked and disgusted by equal measure. Was that Trumpf recruitment by any chance?
  • 9
    @helloworld make Donald Drumpf again
  • 5
    These type of people should not hang up, instead they should be hanged 😒😒😒😒😒
  • 19
    I don't give two fucks about gender if you can code who cares, some people are still stuck in the fucking dark ages. Christ
  • 6
    @gustash That's the EXACT language we need here.
  • 3
    @helloworld I would not be surprised if she volunteered part time to help make the dark ages great again. *Trump finger motion*
  • 3
    @philcr Right? Sadly, these calls are pretty common for me and some other female devs I know. This just happened to be the worst one I got. 😒
  • 4
    Wow! And this was coming from a female recruiter as well? That is just so messed up!
  • 6
    Inform the recruiter that you know enough "technical stuff" to replace him. I mean, what's involved? Parsing a bunch of texts looking for keywords that match a list of predefined words.

    Hell, just use a regex library and half the work is done...

    The guy is an idiot. In a year he will be selling hot dogs and making more than he makes now. Because now he makes zilch.

    @minimango I don't get the male / female divide in tech people insist that it doesn't exist but I see it quite often. Sadly tech recruiters don't understand the industry and still think you have to be a spotty pizza eating bloke with long greasy hair. The industry doesn't help break the stereotype by being vastly male dominated. Wish I could help.

    Change the perceptions of the morons
  • 2
    @crystalclear Don't understand the downvotes... #thisiswhyweneedfeminism!!!
  • 3
    @minimango as a man, I'm terribly sorry for creating this notion in peoples minds that we program using our penis... People must think that... It's the only reasonable explanation...
  • 5
    @afduarte because what you mean is equalism. We don't want this happening to men because women have a bigger advantage, we want this happening to no one because everyone is equal.
  • 3
    I struggle to comprehend how any recruiter in the last 10 years would even begin to think such an attitude was acceptable. Either that or they had an strong desire to get fired.
  • 4
    @gustash if you care enough to learn more about feminism, you'll see that that is exactly what it means
  • 2
    @samk The problem is they don't get fired...
  • 6
    @afduarte if you read enough about equalism you'll find out this is exactly what we do want
  • 0
    @JBPeb Yup, another woman, unfortunately.
  • 6
    @nmunro I should have told her that I could create a brochure that visually describes how she'll lose her job to us "techy" people. I'll even throw in some Smart Art because I'm experienced, dammit.
  • 4
    This rant is exactly what devrant is for.
  • 2
    @philcr Sadly, it still exists. It doesn't help that my city isn't a tech hub (Las Vegas) so people assume I'm either a cocktail waitress or club dancer. To be a software developer is unheard of for females here.
  • 8
    @afduarte Wait, you guys don't program with your penis? shit I've been doing it wrong!

    All joking aside, maybe the OP should call the parent company and explain what happened? Respect to all the women who keep on keeping on, and even more respect to the women working to change this perception.

    @lreading I... I do... ✋😳
  • 3
    Wow, now that's just asking for trouble.

    hope you are OK as I imagine that must have been a knock.
  • 3
    Name and Shame time?
  • 2
    @sageal Let's just leave it at Jennifer. Screw *this particular* Jennifer. 😒
  • 1
    @nblackburn I'm quite alright. I almost feel bad that she's that.....ignorant? ALMOST.
  • 1
    @lreading I could, but that's a recruiting agency/woman I probably wouldn't want to work with anyway. Plus, I'd waste valuable devRant time I could otherwise engage in. 😉
  • 1
    Ignorance at its finest. ...I'm almost impressed by it
  • 1
    @hannah Right? At first I thought to myself, "Did....did she actually just say that? Does she comprehend the words that are coming out of her mouth?!"
  • 1
    I seriously have no clue whatsoever how these people think. Some of the best developers I ever met are women. What's the big deal about gender in this field again?
  • 5
    @afduarte Stop apologising on behalf of men. Men did not create this. Everyone did. And apologising only victimises women, which misses the point of gender equality.
  • 3
    @BellAppLab ^ this guy gets it
  • 2
    @MarShal Apparently, that "techy" stuff is reserved for the intelligent male? /s
  • 1
    @minimango I call BS really. Where I work, no joke the BEST developer and DBA I ever met is a woman. I always marvel at the way she codes and how she does her projects and work ethic. It's amazing and inspiring. I worked with her on several projects and I have nothing but praise for her. So no it is not reserved for men. In fact I believe that women can be just as good if not better than men in this field. So that recruiter can go do something bad to herself haha. Like what are they doing really? They first patenoize women for not being in STEM fields and now that they are, they don't like it? Effin BS.

    Shout out to @rakkoo for being my 100th vote on this rant! You got me a squishy ball!!!! Thank You! 😍

    Congratulations!! 👏👏
  • 3
    That is so f***ed up, after 18 years in the IT industry some of the best devs I've worked with are women.
  • 1
    *high five for you and a high five for Jennifer's face* Nothing like dealing with a luddite that thinks it's the 1950s. Wait...did she want you to make those pamphlets with a printing press? That might explain it.
