WSL to run Linux stuff is like putting your car on a trailer and hauling it around instead of just driving it.

WSL sounds great at first. I'll even admit it had me thinking about going back to a primary Windows environment.

Let me be very clear though, WSL is NOT Linux.

It's a container with some special volume mounts.

It's not clear yet, but WSL is probably the worst thing that's ever happened to Linux.

We now have users who have "mastered" a terminal and think they are ops engineers.

These users have never configured a firewall, or know what systemd or systemV is. They wouldn't know the difference between dnf, yum ,apt, pac, dpkg, or rpm.

They have never installed custom package repos, wouldn't even know how to begin.

These "masters" will take a position because they "know enough" and will severely fuck up a company because they opened port 3306 to the wrong interface.

Who has to go clean that shit up? The actual sysadmins, the ops teams, you.

Fuck Microsoft and fuck WSL with its generic flavoring.

@ComputerToucher I count myself as full-stack. But that doesn't mean I don't know my limitations.

I also make it abundantly clear to everyone what my limitations are.

Got a kernel panic? Get me the fuck out of there.

Need routes or major firewall changes? Ask someone else.

Need to debug an issue and check for open ports? I'm your guy.

Need to install (software)? I gotchu.

You don't want me to configure your DB, but I can help connect everything and make sure it's not open to the world.

To me, full-stack is someone who knows enough to know they know nothing.

Fuck it. I like WSL.
It has rsync! pretty much the only reason to use it.

I've been using wsl2 for about 3 months now. I just can't continue. It works, but it's such a hassle. It's yet one more layer to deal with, which may or may not be the cause of some of the issues you'll be running into. Is the cause of issue X wsl2? Is it Linux? Or docker? Or an NPM package? Or a combination of the above?

I just don't have the time to deal with all this bullshit. I'm waiting for a new computer, I'll be installing Manjaro on it and go to town. If possible, I'll try to kill docker in our dev environment as well.

I think this is amazing news, specially when Microsoft is giving any solution for making user comfortable. As I see in this game:

Can you run it on OSx? Can you run it on Linux? Can you run it on Android?

No, you need to pay for a pro Windows license. You need to have a Windows store account. You need to be a part of their product lineup to use it.

Nothing is free. It either costs you time, to money, privacy, or a combination of the three.

A multi-billion dollar company does not create a product out of the goodness of their heart. They created WSL to take a chunk of their users back.

They don't care about the users that left because of the shitty support or invasion of privacy. They want the users that are using Linux as an administration or developer tool.

They bought GitHub to control and use the treasure trove of open source solutions.

Microsoft is the captain Hook to our software Neverland. The best damn corporate pirates money can buy.
