OK! NOBODY MOVE! 🙅

I finally have a candidate for the laptop I want to buy. 😁

MSI modern 15 A5M

Anybody used it? Anybody got something against it?

    Looks ok over all.

The HDD... hopefully it's not a 128GB, you'll struggle to keep Windows under that, unless your ditching it for Linux?

Graphics card, wait no specs, ok then, don't expect much out of that it's integrated.

A tiny battery, but then it's MSI 😅

Where you getting this from, the typical retailers don't have it.

I'm actually opting for an upgraded one.

    And yes, switching to Linux.

    Also, centrecom has one.

@NoMad oh ok, then yea that's not bad at all then, as long as you don't need a decent GPU.

@C0D4 don't think I will. Anything I'll need a good GPU for, needs a freaking dedicated server. (ML obv)

The CPU is the older Zen2 refreshed, not Zen3, because in the 5000 lineup, 5x00 means Zen2 with odd x and Zen3 with even x.

RAM is with slots, that's good, but remember that Ryzens love dual channel, so you should populate both slots symmetrically. I'd guess it ships with 1x8GB, so you should add in another 8GB. In particular because the graphics memory also discounts from the system memory.

512GB SSD is not really much, but upgrading afterwards isn't difficult, and there's a second slot.

Integrated Vega graphics are fine (except for serious gaming or ML), but you'll probably need a pretty recent kernel. The keyboard backlight may be a problem, so I'd research whether there is a Linux driver, or maybe it just works with the Fn keys without driver.

Intel AX200 wifi works nicely with Linux, I have the same.

    @electrineer

Yeah 90s laptops had a bit less of the "fragile hyperintegrated glued system of a chip you can bake eggs on" disadvantages.

But they were also less laptoppy. Less mobile.

Proper computing and mobility don't go well together.

I think the space in between the constrictiveness of sleek mobile smartphones and the freedoms offered by bulky steel-cased computers is best left empty — because the compromises always end up disappointing.

But yeah, that's a personal observation, biased by personal use cases and experiences.

    Did you break it yet?

    P.S. Can I move now?
