I did pass through this, wanting to leave work and become a barista, but never took the step. It's a common thing it seems.

yehaaw25683yLmao. Well when I have my crisis I image myself working in a fishing boat. Never actually did it, but seems romantic and peaceful in a way.
I’ve worked as anti-money laundering officer at a bank, made movie props for one of the well known shows produced by the HBO. I’m currently enrolled in AI master’s degree and I’m in my fifth year of software engineer career. Currently working at big tech. -
JsonBoa30143yBaristas do not lose that much weight, waiters/waitresses do - besides being on their feet, they carry heavy food trays and bend over tables to put food in plates or listen to older patrons on noisy rooms.
Great core exercise. Hurts your back and shoulders.
I never had a "career" as a waiter - did it for a few weeks at a time every summer or so - but I was a sufficiently tall teenager who wanted the cash. I got quite thin. -
NoMad136673y@JsonBoa I do all of that too. Baristas don't just make coffee and say adios. Most actually have to do serving as well. (at least where I am)
The new buzzword is "Cafe all-rounder". -
NoMad136673y@yehaaw good for you, but can't promise you that something is at the end of that road. #BeenThereDoneThat

JsonBoa30143y@NoMad heh. where I lived and worked as a kid most places were severely overstaffed, so specialization was a thing.
But nowadays the industry has changed, it seems. Remember to stretch. -
Barista is the shittiest low paying job it could be. Same ad McDonalds employee. It is not a peaceful job also. Constant attention with zero to no rest. Better try construction work, at least sone physical work
-
NoMad136673y@hjk101 I can make a perfect cup, 9.5 out of 10. 😛 But people are weird. Some literally ask for coffee with burnt milk. I can't control those.
-
NoMad136673y@aviophile not here. It's a decent pay. If you work 40 hours a week, you get paid the same rate as most office jobs.
Now realizing the whole "Fuck this shit, I'm gonna become a barista" was literally a midlife crisis.
Now, how do I find my way back to a brand new PhD application? Or a research job... Or a dev job... Honestly, I'd take whatever.
Side note, after weeks of being on my feet and working 6-8 hours a day, I have lost exactly zero kilos. This was a very bad idea. 🤦
So, I'm not the smartest, but at least now I have had two careers. How many of you can say that you've had two different careers in your life, eh?
