My answer to this question in one interview was, "Because I used to work here before I was caught up in a round of random layoffs and the reason you have a job working on XYZ website is because I was the dev who built it."

Well, I said it much more diplomatically than that. But they acted like that was no reason at all.

They called on me. I had an ego itch to scratch. But I knew they'd never rehire me because I knew the HR person and he was the worst at getting back to people. The job went unfilled for another three months.
