Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

@AvatarOfKaine I think it is just a matter of not wanting to say the entire thing, its just simpler to say Linux than GNU Linux and people get it. Might take away some of the importance of GNU, but eventually people that get into Linux and those that invest on it on a company wise level know that importance is and should also be attributed to GNU

@AvatarOfKaine I am not taking credit away from GNU and appreciate it from what it is. But at the end of the day they were lacking a crucial component from their engineering efforts: The kernel. For which even years after Hurd has not been completed.

Calling it Linux because it is based on the Linux kernel is acceptable, much in the same way of calling BSD based distros just BSD
