digital lock is broken so I'm locked outside the office. I'm the first to arrive by an hour gap, so I'm here waiting for maintenance to let me in 🤡🤡🤡

Digital locks should not exist. they make me inordinately angry.

I mean, they have their place, but it's certainly not in office buildings. or really anywhere.

@Root wrong. Subpar products shouldn’t exist, waste of material.

@neriald what actually happened was that our rooms were built recently but for some fuckin reason they installed the old system, and the rest of the building is using the new system. because of that, the lock was rejecting access from everyone

@neriald As a developer, why would you ever want an electronic lock?

They have a few advantages, such as remote unlocking, event logging, remote rekeying, etc. but they have considerable downsides, too:

Software bugs, security flaws, backdoors, remote updates, poor quality electronics, electrical shorts, power outages, EMI, … it isn’t about product quality, it’s the implementation itself that’s the problem.

And those are just for solenoid locks. If it actually requires a digital key instead like with Bluetooth locks, you can skim those, or brute force them from a distance. WiFi connected locks are worse yet. If they’re instead contact-only readers, they still have the flaws I listed earlier, so why not have a physical key?

Seriously, why would anyone ever think these are a good idea?

Locks are meant to protect things, and adding complexity (especially anything allowing remote access or changes) makes that all the more difficult and insecure.

No, electronic locks are a terrible idea.

@neriald that reminds me of that news that a tesla locked a guy in while it was burning and the guy had to break the window to get out

@darksideofyay haha I didn’t know that one but I heard about how fiery is their chemical fire. Poor guy, should sue them.
