Manager: You know you did good this week, take the entire day off tomorrow

Dev: Really?

Manager: Yeah my treat.

Dev: Can you send that to me in an email?

Manager: ….I mean yeah, but I don’t see why that is necessary

*** About halfway through The next day

Manager: WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?! YOU HAVEN’T COMPLETED A SINGLE TICKET TODAY OR REVIEWED A SINGLE PR OR EVEN SO MUCH AS ATTENDED THE STANDUP. EXPLAIN YOURSELF!

Dev: You said I could take the day off today?

Manager: YEAH BUT YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO ACTUALLY TAKE IT OFF!! I WAS GIVING YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW DEDICATION TO THE COMPANY BY COMING IN ANYWAY BUT NO YOU THOUGHT YOU’D JUST TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR GENEROSITY AND HAVE AN ENTIRE DAY TO YOURSELF?! GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS, THERE ARE URGENT TICKETS ON THE BOARD!

Dev: …

the fuck? what is that gaslighting?

is this real? What even is "our generosity" if it's faked and there's none in the first place? What?

I hope you are documenting all of this shit. This is some seriously fucked up bullshit and mental games.

@Hazarth Yup. In working today when I was told in writing to not come in. My guess is that the offer was initially genuine but then they realized their kpi’s were affected by my being gone for a day along with a critical prod issue coming up and they needed to spin it as my fault. It’s pretty standard corporate gaslighting (ie. nothing is ever the managers fault), although if things go to shit by being gone for half a day then I know my job is pretty safe so whatever

@Demolishun Yeah this was low, even for them. I’m keeping notes, no worries.

3 interviews for next week, I’m gunning to get out of here asap.

@Demolishun it’s all pretty well documented right here on devrant :)

    Legitimately psychopath behavior

Manager is a fucking nutcase. Good of you to ask the proof in writing.

    Always get shit in writing.

    Complacency is quid pro quo.

I have my days off and my "days off". During the former, all hell may break loose, I ain't gonna deal with it.

During regular days off, I still have the sysadmin mentality, and will answer urgent calls. However, it's on your superiors to correctly determine what's urgent.

My boss wouldn't dare to call me in days off over a pipeline failing, but that's long time understanding and teaching of what's really business critical.

Do teach it. Abide by it.

Maybe I sounded a little too condescending.

I mean, when you are ordered or gifted, get shit in writing anyway.

Don't let people get away with their hubris with what is rightfully yours.

I confess: I used to drink so much just to get through a previous job that I did this to a junior once. Couldn’t even remember authorising it.

That's not a manager. If I'm the head of HR, I'd fire his/her ass. Overworked developers are prone to burnout, which can lead to poor code.

@boombodies you are leaving WHAT THE FUCK YOU DISLOYAL CUNT!
We don't need people like you, this lack of dedication is why we have issues now - management
  • 9
    Show dedication?
My reply to that "manager" would be

I showed dedication by keeping my word and taking the day off. You gave your word I could take the day off it is in writing and you show dedication by keeping your word. If you can't even keep your word how can we even call you a "man" much less a "manager?"
