He also likes Linux because he doesn't need to have it connected to the Internet. Keeps him from getting distracted.
-
direct347y@tisaconundrum Right, cause you need to have Windows and macOS connected to the internet?
-
gates37yIn our OS is more intuitive, just power cycle the system.
No need to go try opening any fancy shells, nor bashs, or ashs for that matter.
Just power cycle. -
direct347y@DucksCanCode Never said so... but Wikipedia disagrees with you: "Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system".
-
@direct distros are operating systems, Linux is the kernel. And Wikipedia can be wrong.
-
@direct oh wow ok I stand corrected, sorry. What are distros then, are they just derivatives of the original Linux?
-
direct347y@DucksCanCode Hehe no problem. Well I guess it's just Linux (kernel/OS/whatever) bundled with third-party software, though I'm not quite sure.
-
direct347y@DucksCanCode AFAIK, Linux is the actual kernel, like you said, but the article also states that the name Linux can be used to describe an OS built on the kernel. Distributions use different bootloaders, shells, desktop environments, etc., but as a whole, the OS (distribution) could be called Linux. That's what I gathered from the article. 😊
-
direct347y@DucksCanCode Haha tl;dr the term 'Linux' can be used for both the kernel and any OS based on the kernel.

bashlord4397yAnything other than GNU/Linux is negative in the freedom dimension. @DucksCanCode @direct
