iAmNaN68457ySounds like hardware. I run Linux (CentOS) on a little netbook with 2GB ram and a 1.66 dual core Atom processor, and runs great.
-
You could try Xubuntu, which uses XFCE and works fine on my old Netbook (Intel Core 2 Dual from 2010, 2 GB RAM, too lazy to start it up right now for precise specs), but Antergos with KDE works fine too, the same goes for Kali (with GNOME). I think that your hardware might be broken.
-
Dell i3 with 8gb ram. hmmm.ive tried gnome desktop environment it's not that fast, and it does kinda hang a bit.i suggest ,you get a distribution like Ubuntu mate.ive never had any problem with mate.or use lubuntu or xubuntu which is two distros that are very very light on resources.t hat should help things out a bit
-
iAmNaN68457y@rehman but if you have bad memory, or a slowly failing drive, you will have issues regardless of OS.
-
@iAmNaN how do I diagnose either, running antergos + kde (I know I should do a proper arch, but too lazy currently)
-
If u want just the easiest and simple to make some responsive improvement, dont use desktop environment and try some lightweight window manager.
-
@rehman window here is the frame that use to draw gui by display server or compositor in wayland case. (im not talking about Windows os)
window manager can manipulate window, such as resize, close, change and select to another window, etc. -
iAmNaN68457y@inukinator there is memtester for memory, and I think smartctl will work for checking the drive. You may need to install.
-
I had the same issue with windows but it doesn't appear in my Debian 8 install. It's probably your hardware. If not, try other distros.
-
Chances are its the hard drive. Slow access speeds cause shit to hang. So you will get this with any GUI based OS
-
asgs112757y@rehman yes, SSD. Plus any distro with a light weight WM like XFCE will turn things around
-
asgs112757y@rehman a computer's speed is (mainly) dependent on three major parts - CPU, RAM, and Disk. The net speed of your machine is the lowest common denominator (which is the hard disk). Your specs for the first two are decent enough for day to day programming. So, SSD is the obvious choice
-
@rehman unfortunately yes. Helped me with Windows alot! Windows is genuinely a pleasure using with one. Your cpu isn't great and 8gb of ram should be fine. Is it a laptop your using?
-
@rehman Ahh. Then yeah, the best thing you can do is get an ssd. But that said, they are expensive.
-
rehman15167y@Telescuffle I can afford it I just want to get rid of my pc hanging. It really breaks my rythm of work I have to start all my programs again to get things going and time is wasted
-
rehman15167y@Gatgeagent on another laptop I have xfce Ubuntu unity and it hangs more than gnome so I don't think both of my laptop has hardware problem.
