I just want my computer to do all the things so if i feel like doing something, I don't need to worry that it can't handle it. (And I know people are going to tell me to use Linux, I will. But i want windows as a backup)

I'm sure spending $1500 on RAM is a very reasonable choice

@demiko I'm planning on being "excessive in my ridiculous numbers of vms" as my friend put it... plus playing games (And leaving them open while I switch between them because I get bored easily)

I think this rig is a bit uneven.
You only have a 4 core CPU on an extreme platform (quad channel) which has to work with a 1080ti. The CPU will bottleneck the whole thing badly during gaming. And when I consider you may want to compile stuff or render videos, at least consider a 6 core, but for this rig I'd recomment at least 8 cores.
If you don't intend to run it heavily as a server, 64 gigglebytes would be more than enough, sou you could invest that money in some more CPU cores. 😉

Additionally I'd recommend buying a 850 or 900W PSU, so you have enough room for more HDDs later on.

@qbasic16 significantly less than the cost of that lol. If I build one that'll last me a long ass time, I'm less concerned about price because it'll be a better value. If it'll only last a year or two before I manage to overwork it and need to replace it, then about a grand, tops, if it's pretty

This would be my suggestion for you:

6-8 core CPU (socket 2011-v3)

32/64 GB DDR4

Closed-loop water cooler (w/ 2 fans is enough)

M.2 SSD with >= 1TB, with NVMe

>4TB HDD (if you want to go crazy, buy 2x for RAID1 or 5x for RAID5)

1080ti

900/1000W PSU (to have enough room, 850W min.)

looks legit. Needs three screens, more cpu cores, 4 ssds in a raid 0+1, and a strong psu. Then it would be a beast

@taylorviktorya OK so I guess if the price is a bit hard to swallow, go for a 6 core (Xeon E5 2620v3) and a GTX 1070, 32GB RAM (16 should suffice for most cases, but for multiple VMs 32GB is better),
go for a 512 or 1TV M.2 SSD with NVMe (way faster than those SATA things) and a 2-4TB HDD.
Get an air cooler for the CPU (best is Noctua), watercoolers are overkill.

Computer hardware is a bad business for longterm investment. The hardware gets outperformed really fast (mostly the GPU), so just buy a good quality mainboard, SSD, PSU and HDD and your PC will live for >6-7 years. Most cause of failure is the mainboard and SSD/HDD and PSU.
For PSUs I strongly recommend Seasonic gold or Platinum. For Mainboards ASUS and Gigabyte.
For the SSD it's important, if you want an M.2, that it has NVMe.
I can recommend the Samsung 960 Pro, I have 2 of them.

NEVER EVER go for RAID0. It is plain stupid and as such alone a very very bad thing. RAID0 means: If one drive fails, there is no way to get any of the data back.

@taylorviktorya haha yeah my credit card would be swearing before i got to half the stuff you got on that list. Its just lucky i like portability so i stick with laptops and i haven't found a laptop that has the full feature set I'm looking for

@qbasic16 yeah a raid0 by itself isnt a smart move unless you are very good with remote backups. Its very good for read speed though. Which is why i said raid0+1 it gives you some protection of ONE burning out like a raid5 but better speed

Internal sound cards are useless these days, if you really need one get a usb sound card. Also that processor is kinda silly on that mobo. I think ryzen or threadripper would be a better idea, especially for a lot of vms (more threads).

@jckimble it's ok, my credit cards are hiding, and a friend I can actually spend long periods of time around without being annoyed has said he'd not take me out drinking as promised when he gets back if I buy anything within the same week of looking at it (I'm a bit impulsive... it's how I have a car)

Btw. RAID1 should be just as good for reading speeds as RAID0, if properly implemented on the controller. 😉

@taylorviktorya it makes sense, well atleast to me. your an impulse shopper which isn't surprising alot of women are. You got a good friend that will take you out drinking if you resist it.

But apart from writing what you did, might want to tone down the system for exactly what you need with alittle room for growth. Anything thats built to last more than 5 years is usually over priced

@qbasic16 yeah true. Write speed suffers though. All the raids have different purposes. For desktop systems raid0, raid1 or raid1+0 are the only ones i would recomend though. When you get to raid5,raid5+hotswap,raid6 you start getting into file server purposes

32gb is *usually* enough, but not always and my concern is that ill get used to having 64 and then that will stop always being enough

If you don't have any available, you can also get a key from Amazon for 30$ rather than 130$

Why would you need an audio card, and two network one?! Pick one ! And why go for full RGB, it s useless I guess... Especially for the RAM because you will probably have to put some kind of power adaptor for them if they are not self powered.
