kiki350831yThere are boosts that persist across multiple playing sessions like magnet/jetpack/boots/score boost durations, but Pixel Dungeon features scrolls of identity/stones of intuition that allow you to identify scrolls and potions. When you do it, the effect is permanent and will persist across different playthroughs, so that's a pass too.

always thought Pixel Dungeon is somewhat of a roguelite, because of the progression of unlocking characters, but i think all the definitions about what is and what isn't a roguelike don't help to pick the genre.

iiii90881y@thebiochemic character unlock is not interfering with being roguelike. Unless the characters literally supercede the original ones, instead of adding variability
-
@iiii as i said, to many ways to interpet it. It makes sense to me to class it as a roguelite because of the fact that it adds gameplay features, that go beyond a "run", but your argument is valid too (and apparently the PD Community agrees to you too).

iiii90881y@thebiochemic I think I've seen that feature in quite a few other classic roguelikes as well. Maybe the mentioned Cardinal Quest even, but I haven't played it for a long time

Parzi86631y@FallingUpwards snag the APK from somewhere else, and it works 99% of the time (if not on Android 12+)
You may not be ready to accept what I'm about to say, but Subway Surfers is a true roguelike game.
Let's see:
- Procedurally generated levels — check.
- Grid-based layout — check. You have three predetermined lanes and seven height levels: sliding, running, jumping without boots (small obstacle height), jumping with boots (train height), jumping from train to bridges (bridge height) and jetpack.
- Permanent death — check. When you die, you start from the score of 0. This can be avoided with keys, but Pixel Dungeon features ankhs that resurrect you, and they can be purchased. Pixel Dungeon is undoubtably a true roguelike game, so if they can get away with it, Subway Surfers can too.
Yep.
