iAmNaN68457yIt really is a racket. It's a little better over here, but that same mentality is starting to take hold. With the skill shortage over here, they do have a nice little clause, though, "or equivalent work experience."
-
@Linuxxx move out here! My company needs you. They don't know it yet, but they do! They only have a few people who can actually manage Linux servers without their hands being held along the way... lol
-
MrR0bot27547yBeen there man! Hang in there. Rejection is just another neg thing we all have to deal with.
-
Been there, seen that.
I am of a firm belief that when a company rejects your resume, or calls off the interview at a later stage, the interviewee deserves a right to know where she/ he slipped up.
Any feedback is a good feedback to reflect on, and frankly, such a move could really work wonders for someone's career down the line. -
Freelance dude. Good way to get your foot in the door. Nobody cares about freelancer cert. As long as you have a good track record.
-
vertti4537yThat's ridiculous. Computer science is all about making it your hobby and your passion. Schools are always late to adopt new tech, and universities have a highly academic approach rather than practical.
Doing uni is the easiest thing in the world. All you gotta do is read some stuff and write it down on the paper in an exam. Anybody can do it. It's an accepted form of modern mental laziness.
Certifications are a business and generally don't mean shit. All the information in the modern age is online. Being an expert is all about reading and experimenting by yourself. That's how the hardcore tech experts, new programming language builders, Linux kernel developers etc. are grown.
Don't give up man, the brightest and the most agile companies appreciate people like you. -
devnope5397yBeen there, done that.
Mostly the same here, i had luck to get into a business, which lends technicans to corporate partners. Whichbis awesome for gathering resume entries...and at some point this overweights school... You won't get around doing certifications I guess. -
flag020317yWhat a bunch of assholes. They don't want a man literally named linuxxx to handle Linux environment. Their loss.
-
Fuck them.
Happens here where I am too.
I have been looking for a Linux Sys Admin job now for a while, and my years in Windows Server Admin has actually seemingly hindered my chances.
Certification seems to hold the same merit it does there.
You know what grinds my gears? When they hire some stupid shit, who has no fucking idea what he is doing but has the qualification.
Nailed the test exam for the job, other dude failed it - guess who got the job. Fuck sakes.
Hope all goes well in your case, and that your job opportunity presents itself soon. -
simo002m5867yThose fucking assholes... I bet they'd hire some fucking richkid noob just because he has some fucking education that his dad prpbably bribed the head of the uni to get! Absolutely typical...
-
@linuxxx i relate with you in every sentence... Same here. Wish you , and myself, lots of luck.
-
if this way doen't work, try something else. The best jobs I've have got was by relation. So go to hackathons, go to meetups, hack some companies.
And get at least that said linux certificate.
you can list meetups as education 😉 -
@NinjaMoonLight I actually want to move abroad yes but would need money to move first...
-
-
@linuxxx what if @taylorviktorya asks you to marry her, sure you can get a green card after that!? No?
-
@Letmecode imagine this rant being the cause of a marriage. @taylorviktorya what say you?
-
@taylorviktorya obviously some peepz forgot a \0 in their comment string rant, thus going waaaayyyy too far ahead of themselves.
How about you two make a collab and see where it goes? -
@linuxxx Nog op zoek? Zie net een aanvraag voor 2 (junior) linux engineers in Apeldoorn.
-
iAmNaN68457y@CodeMasterAlex but Apeldoorn isn't in California. You're ruining the romantic story here. Lol
-
I totally typed that wrong into the translator, and got the beginnings of a nautical story. Something about the sea, a cruise line and an engineer...
-
Ive noticed that server dudes always need more certs and stuff than the frontend monkeys...There has to be some other way to prove a person has the know-how aside from paying for all these certs and courses.

So I've been looking for a Linux sysadmin job for a while now. I get a lot of rejections daily and I don't mind that because they can give me feedback as for what I am doing wrong. But do you know what really FUCKING grinds my FUCKING gears?
BEING REJECTED BASED ON LEVEL OF EDUCATION/NOT HAVING CERTIFICATIONS FOR CERTAIN STUFF. Yes, I get that you can't blindly hire anyone and that you have to filter people out but at least LOOK AT THEIR FUCKING SKILLSET.
I did MBO level (the highest sub level though) as study which is considered to be the lowest education level in my country. lowest education level meaning that it's mostly focused on learning through doing things rather than just learning theory.
Why the actual FUCK is that, for some fucking reason, supposed to be a 'lower level' than HBO or Uni? (low to high in my country: MBO, HBO, Uni). Just because I learn better by doing shit instead of solely focusing on the theory and not doing much else does NOT FUCKING MEAN THAT I AM DUMBER OR LESS EDUCATED ON A SUBJECT.
So in the last couple of months, I've literally had rejections with reasons like
- 'Sorry but we require HBO level as people with this level can analyze stuff better in general which is required for this job.'. - Well then go fuck yourself. Just because I have a lower level of education doesn't FUCKING mean that I can't analyze shit at a 'lower level' than people who've done HBO.
- 'You don't seem to have a certificate for linux server management so it's a no go, sorry!' - Kindly go FUCK yourself. Give me a couple of barebones Debian servers and let me install a whole setup including load balancers, proxies if fucking neccesary, firewalls, web servers, FUCKING Samba servers, YOU FUCKING NAME IT. YES, I CAN DO THAT BUT SOLELY BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE THAT FUCKING CERTIFICATE APPEARANTLY MEANS THAT I AM TOO INCOMPETENT TO DO THAT?! Yes. I get that you have to filter shit but GUESS WHAT. IT'S RIGHT THERE IN MY FUCKING RESUME.
- 'Sorry but due to this role being related to cyber security, we can't hire anyone lower than HBO.' - OH SO YOUR LEVEL OF EDUCATION DEFINES HOW GOOD YOU ARE/CAN BE AT CYBER SECURITY RELATED STUFF? ARE YOU MOTHERFUCKING RETARDED? I HAVE BEEN DOING SHIT RELATED TO CYBER SECURITY SINCE I WAS 14-15 FUCKiNG YEARS OLD. I AM FAMILIAR WITH LOADS OF TOOLS/HACKING TECHNIQUES/PENTESTING/DEFENSIVE/OFFENSIVE SECURITY AND SO ON AND YOU ARE TELLING ME THAT I NEED A HIGHER LEVEL OF FUCKING EDUCATION?!?!? GO FUCKING FUCK YOURSELF.
And I can go on like this for a while. I wish some companies I come across would actually look at skills instead of (only) study levels and certifications. Those other companies can go FUCK THEMSELVES.
