A senior colleague of mine just announced she'll be leaving by the end of the year.

😐 Why do people I specifically need always leave? Am I that destructive? 😢

I know I'm being dramatic, but like... 😖😣😫

I mean, I could see this as an opportunity, but nah. I rather wallow in self-pity. 😭

It’s so damn heartbreaking when a beloved coworker leaves. Like who am I gonna talk shit about the company to now?? Who am I gonna send a PR to to get an instant review now?? It’s not fair

@jassole oh no, buddy, I'm a PhD student. I can't not be needy. Particularly when my work depends on others being there and explaining the "cutting edge" stuff they've done.

Also, how weird it would be if that co-worker told u "I'm not leaving this job only because you work here,.".

It would be a weird scenario.

@Sid2006 in research, that's literally expected. 👀 Like they don't have to be physically present, but mentally they are and that's often more than enough. People live off of their PhD thesis, usually. Except the ones that have done a shabby work and even they themselves don't want to look at their work.

Way different mindset and scenario.

@Sid2006 that's fair. Idk, given how wildly I have changed gears in my career (not that wild, just from backend/devops dev to ai to robotics+ai research) I really appreciate people who have been at the same job for over 2-3 years. Their experiences often shine light on my dusty path.

@ostream it's more than that. Office politics, paper works, everything. She knows lots of tips and tricks. 😢

This is simple. Before she leaves: "We should do lunch sometime."

Then pay for her lunch every Saturday if you have to.
