Am I missing something or is PERL a tool of satan?

YES! PERL IS THE WORST.

Our ticketing system runs on OTRS which is several tens of thousands of files of Perl. Every time my boss tells me to try and fix any gripe with it I'm just like "yeah no way to do that sorry".

I did manage to survive modifying Webmin's BIND module though.

perl is a write-only language.
Powerful, fast, but heaven help you if you have to support perl scripts you didn't write.
