    > "Waiter took for himself another +$1.6 tip."

    Can't +1 this one.

My mom was a waitress for most of my childhood and tips the only way she made extra money for us. She worked hard and put up with *a lot* of nonsense. I tip well because of her.

That said, I don't tip (well) if:

    - You don't bother to refill my water (or even ask)

    - You don't check on us and only see you to take the order and wait until we're done to drop off the check

    - Ask for ketchup/A1/napkins and come back with salsa/mayonnaise (didn't bring what we asked for)

    - When my wife wants her steak well-done, and its bloody rare, sends it back, and you come back and it's still rare (not as bloody, but still rare). You didn't even look and now pissed off we're asking *again* to cook the darn steak

    - Wife orders french fries, you bring onion rings, you say to keep the rings. 10 min. later we have to ask "where are the fries?", then the check comes, you charge us for the rings saying "you ate the rings"

@PaperTrail aren't tips a country thing? Like I know that restaurants in Japan don't have a tip system.

USA has like 20% tips as a norm.

OP is from Serbia and I don't know what the system there is.

@PaperTrail everyone receives their own salary at every job including waiters, otherwise if waiters only source of income are TIPS then what is the difference between being literally homeless and being a waiter? This has nothing to do with waiters personally I dont give a fuck about giving anyone tips including barbers plumbers shitcleaners and anyone just because they want some extra money. I want extra money too motherfuckers and nobody ever "tips" me nor do i require being tipped because im not a fucking homeless dipshit to beg for 1.6$ or be rude because i didnt get a 1.6$ tip or do my job way worse just because of not getting extra 1.6$. YOU GET YOUR FUCKING MONTHLY SALARY EVEN IF YOU'RE A WAITER

    @SidTheITGuy > "aren't tips a country thing?"

Yes. In the US, the free market has normalized unlimited earning potential for service workers (waiters/waitresses, masseuses, etc). My sister (no college degree) was a waitress for many years and could easily make an extra $200~$400 a night just on tips. Cash, mostly tax free (only reported her hourly wage and some low % over for tips).

Ex-girlfriend (not bad looking and kinda flirty), paid for a car, and other expensive girly things in cash all from her waitress tips (again, mostly tax free). She said a pat on the shoulder could get an extra $20 on the table. The older the guys, the nicer she was, the bigger the tips. She never did the "high on the thigh skirt, more cleavage" tricks, but other girls did. In a college town, $100 bills would/could be dropped.

@b2plane > "what is the difference between being literally homeless and being a waiter?"

The waiter probably has a home to go to.

In this area, the homeless mostly panhandles (nice way of saying begging) and makes more per hour than a lot of folks. I'm sure mental illness plays into the lifestyle choices, but its still a choice.

This is actually the origin story of Hitler
  • 4
@SidTheITGuy tipping is here very optional too. Most people don't. But minimum wages are quite high so it's not really needed
  • 1
Ah yes, of course, blame the waiters, as if they don't already usually have a shitty life. The corpos tho? Naaaah, they're saints, perfectly normal in any profession to underpay your workers and force the costumer to pay your workers salary instead. But nah, always blame the waiter.
    Go fuck yourself mate.

Or just learn some manners, you have a mouth, you can SPEAK. A "excuse me sir? I think you took an incorrect amount" if that was an accident you give them a chance to appologize and not cause a scene, and if it was malice you make them embarrassed(usually) and give them a chance to claim it was a mistake.

    Interesting! Explain please!

@PaperTrail how about i get paid some tips for being a loyal customer to the restaurant or coffee shop? Why dont i get paid? Why do i only have to SPEND my money. Bunch of bullwhacks
  • 2
@SoldierOfCode not my problem because the business pays shit to a waiter. Do i look like a fucking charity with billions of dollars to keep donating all these fucking waiters just because the greedy business isnt paying them enough?? If the business who hired them doesn't give a fuck about waiters why should i???

Guess what life is shit by default and life is shit for me too. Just because someone is struggling as a waiter does not mean im supposed to be a GOD, their Lord and Savior by tipping them. Not even the Lord himself is tipping them and not even the business! Its always the poor and middle class who get fucked! Not anymore. Fuck them. No one gives a fuck about me and the same will be returned from me!
  • 0
From now on i will not call these "tips", I'll call them CHARITY DONATIONS BECAUSE THATS EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE. AND I AM NOT A NON-PROFIT CHARITY ORGANIZATION SO FUCJ OFF WAITERS BARBERS AND ANYONE WHO EXPECTS ME TO DONATE YOU. THE WORD "TIP" IS USED SO YOU DONT FEEL LIKE YOURE DONATING MONEY TO A STRANGER, YOU FEEL BETTER WHEN YOU "TIP" (because you got coffee) RATHER THAN "DONATE" (because then you get nothing in return)

@b2plane Ah yes, perfect logic, "my life is shit so yours must be too" yeah sure, take your aggressions and point them at the first person you see instead of at those responsible. Totally mature behavior.
  • 1
@SoldierOfCode so just because someone elses life is shit then my life also has to be shit? Your logic is flawed and circular. You have no arguments. Life being shit by default + no one respecting difficult jobs = has made me not respect even the easiest jobs in the world (waiter)
  • 1
@b2plane I agree with part of this but…

Consider that the nature of tipping has allowed business to pay sub-standard wage to bar tenders and waiters. This has in turn provided a way to increase profits without visibly raising prices. Without the motivation to increase efficiency to increase profitability, no efficiency increases are seen.

Could it be that tipping contributes to an anti-competitive nature of businesses?. Those businesses that are too inefficient (too cheap, too greedy) to pay a regular wage and keep prices reasonable for the patron are those that might have problems surviving without guilting their patrons into tipping large.

Perhaps tippers are actually causing their own problem.

I don’t hold any animosity towards the people that did not strive to better educate themselves towards a better career. I also have no qualms about their salary being commensurate with their ability to provide a common (aka anyone can do it) service.

@b2plane you live with parents. You're homeless yourself
  • 1
    @b2plane

Maybe what you do demanding a handsomely paid job abroad while not showing the skills for it could be considered begging too...
  • 1
    oh, stop your whining.
  • 1
    @b2plane > "business pays shit to a waiter. "

A great thing about the free market in the USA is if you don't like the pay, leave. You have zero obligation to the business to work for less $$ than what you are worth.

I understand that's not everyone's situation and choices are limited, but it has to be better than a socialist/communist 'gimme' structure where the choices are made for you.
  • 0
@PaperTrail "the free market has normalized unlimited earning potential for service workers"

That's literally the same shit as "come work here, we'll pay you in ExPoSuRe". Can't you see what's wrong with it?
  • 0
@electrineer I stand by the historical facts that free markets and capitalism has brought the world out of abduct poverty. Socialism's goal is to maintain the slave state.
Can capitalism lead to a different kind of slave state? Absolutely! That's why there has to be a balance.
  • 1
@PaperTrail companies paying a fair wage to their employees sounds like a better balance to me.
  • 0
@electrineer Who decides what is fair? What is "fair"?

For a socialist, taking what others has earned is "fair"

For a libertarian/conservative, getting to keep what is earned is "fair"
  • 0
@PaperTrail we're talking about paying your employees for their work though.
  • 1
@electrineer > "paying your employees for their work"

Employees are getting paid. Fairness is moral stance which shouldn't be mandated by a manipulative political party.

My point is the free market decides correctly winners and losers. When the liberals/socialists start dictating what individuals *should* get paid (again, a moral stance), it strangles the potential for everyone.

Ex. The $15 minimum wage. Does that affect the political donors (Walmart, etc)? No, they could care less. They simply raise the prices to cover the costs, which increases inflation (and overall tax cash flow), and big business+governments win. Mid-small businesses that can't raise prices to cover costs lose. In my town, 3 restaurants have closed, a grocery store, and a slew of other small businesses because of the mandates and can't compete with corporate donors. Its the underlying premise of 'trickle-down' economics.
  • 2
@PaperTrail a completely free market also means exploitation of the weakest. There's no reason other than political ideology for outsourcing all decision power to the wealthy.
  • 0
@electrineer > "a completely free market also means exploitation of the weakest."

Absolutely. I'm not in the "let anarchy reign!" libertarian camp. Pure capitalistic/free markets are as bad as the socialist/communist ideology.

There has to be guidelines so everyone has equal opportunity while not guaranteeing equal outcomes.

@SidTheITGuy in the U.S., people are math challenged.

I hear comments like “wow, restaurant prices have gone up but the poor server is still only getting tipped 15%, I’m going to tip 20% [the higher the number the bigger the moron]”

And be aware for **great service** it is 15% but again the math challenged people can’t figure 15% out and default to multiplying by 2 for the 20%

Tipping is ***not*** obligatory. If they give shit service you do not tip!!!

We just got back from overseas. They take Apple Pay everywhere there. No option to tip. They pay their employees reasonable wages. Going out to dinner every night was significantly cheaper in Europe than the U.S.

Tipping is “allow the restaurant owner to pay crap wages so you end up with hidden post-meal employee wage charges”

In the U.S. customers have created a monster by showing off with tipping. In Europe they recognize this as (“stupid”) Americans flaunting their wealth. Some even find it insulting
  • 0
@xcodesucks i switched paying via card only. That way i leave 0$ tips. I dont give a fuck if they give me the worst or best service in the world. Its their fuckin job to be good at their job. And this is not some kind of disrespect towards the them. In contrary this is full respect towards them by NOT treating them like homeless losers by giving them "tips" like beggars.

By giving tips to anyone for anything i view them as gypsy homeless beggars whose life depends on a mere 1.26$ tip like losers.

By tipping someone I value them less.

By tipping someone I view them as inferior.

By tipping someone I have no respect for them.

By NOT tipping someone i have full respect for their work, hustle and service.

That is why i do not tip anyone.

Or better yet, when someone asks me when am i gonna tip someone, or why dont i tip someone, I'll just respond with: I'll tip someone whenever i first get tipped by working my software engineering job.

Check mate. Suck it off losers. Fuck off

I am not a non-profit charity organization with infinite money to continuously tip anyone

@b2plane Went to Europe recently. Tipping was very unusual and it was explained to us that it is only in the tourist areas where the Americans typically visit... Prices were very reasonable where we were ($14 got two hoagies, 2 small side salads, and a bottle of great wine, no option to tip, and absolutely some of the best most friendly service we have ever had in our lives). I don't put my perspective out there quite as strong as you do :-) but in general principle I don't disagree at all with you.
