Holy shit, I never thought I would see the day that Microsoft makes me even more disappointed, but this is a NEW low.

The windows 11 email client is being deprecated, and they automatically "upgrade" you to the new outlook.

THERE'S ADS. THERE'S ADVERTISEMENTS IN OUTLOOK. WHAT THE FUCK. IF YOU CLICK THIS, IT JUST OPENS THE AD IN A BROWSER. IT'S IN MY EMAIL LIST, THEY ARE ACTIVELY TRYING TO TRICK YOU INTO CLICKING IT.

This is crappy free Chinese mobile game ad level of scummy. I never fucking thought they would honestly stoop so low as to make misleading ads a default part of their operating system. But here it is, in an app installed by default, developed in-house by Microsoft. Actually astounding and appalling.

    Can you use the "Report" button to report it as spam?
  • 13
    @usr--2ndry HA they got you. In order to report it, you'd need to select it by clicking it, which OPENS THE FUCKING AD

    I will never say anything bad about Thunderbird ever again! Please remind me, if I do.
  • 11
    Weird, I've used Outlook-Web for years, never seen an ad. :)

    @ostream yup apple doesn't provide slow and heavy web tech based apps that you love, but they provide fast and light native apps that I love, like it was in windows 10 era and uwps (like the Mail app that's million times better than this shitty web app)... 4 web apps and use the same amount of ram of an entire OS.

    P.s.
    This web app should be compared to gmail

    @PaperTrail enterprise edition maybe? I dunno, I haven't used it in years.

    I tried to figure out how to host my own email but gave up because the guides that used to exist on how to do it just don't exist anymore (or were more likely hidden)

    Centralization, data collection, and coercion 😬

    this is a sick world
  • 6
    I hope that entire company burns
  • 4
    @shovethisrant they do consort with spirit cookers already. Why a company would post that is beyond me.
  • 4
    Everybody wants to be an advertising company
  • 4
    At least they're advertising vista
  • 2
    @electrineer ptsd shit right there
  • 1
    Gmail has had Ads disguised as emails for ages now. At least there one can use an adblocker. Get rid of outlook in favour of thunderbird?
  • 3
    Windows is an operating system you use to turn your computer into a gaming console. It is no longer meant for doing productive work.

    I hate to be one of "those" guys, but you're probably better off getting rid of Windows if you want an operating system to use for your job, unless you're a game developer or something.

    This is a shame because I like WSL and also Hyper-V for spinning up development VMs, but it is what it is.

    Don't forget to set up your monthly contribution to Thunderbird/Mozilla to at least a bit counterbalance the oligopoly.
  • 1
    I just use proton mail
  • 2
    did it take you so long to realize windows is just you buying a big pack of ads?

    imo thunderbird ist the best
  • 5
    windows 11 is no operating system.

    it's a marketing campaign for linux.

    also: have you heard about our lord and savior "thunderbird"?
  • 3
    Microsoft has included advertisements for third parties in their paid products for like 5 years now. This is normal.
  • 6
    It's not surprising either. The purpose of a publicly traded corporation isn't to make profit, it's to make as much profit as they possibly can. There simply isn't a point where they can stop squeezing the customer. The ideal sales strategy pushes the user to the brink of leaving the company but not enough for them to actually do so.

    @tosensei I've never really needed to switch until now. The default client was basic and sufficient. I barely read my mail on desktop as it is.
  • 3
    maybe someone tell him about thunderbird

    @joewilliams007 I heard about that one that's slower and heavier than Mail ... But faster and lighter than the new outlook web tech based
  • 2
    tbf outlook did have one of the better feature sets i've seen. I've been using google calendar for work for a year now. still miss a lot of small details from outlook
  • 1
    @iceb I totally agree, really cannot stand Gmail and gcalendar, specially for work
  • 2
    Micro$oft

    @John-Does goggl€ appl€ ... Should we continue? How old are you? 5?
  • 4
    @dontbeevil > "How old are you? 5?"

    Be nice. Micro$osft is a throwback insult of how many believed Microsoft was the most evil/corrupt capitalist corporation in the world. Embedding/bundling Microsoft Explorer with Windows XP was the most evil thing a corporation could do (anti competitive, anti-this, anti-that, etc).

    Fast forward only a few years...

    <every other tech company>

    "Pffft...hold my beer."
  • 1
    @PaperTrail exactly, people still stuck in 90s, when all the rest do exactly the same, including bundling their browser in their OS and their store and their apps and their services ..
  • 1
    Never said just micro$oft does it ... I use mostly opensource projet like proton mail, firefox, LibreOffice,etc because i don't want to deal again with EvilCorp 😉
  • 4
    @PaperTrail Microsoft were setting up all the precedent case. Although they lost some battles and had to give up some products (remember they planned to make users pay to use Internet Explorer, shortly before Firefox 1.0 was released) they tested how far a company can go before users turn away - unless forced by their employer or persuaded by mass media - or just hate what they are using grudgingly like taking a Deutsche Bahn train just because there is no alternative.
  • 2
    @PaperTrail didn't Google just get in trouble not long ago?

    I am not sure if it was covered, but Windows was doing some shady shit with hardware. Like influencing companies to not make Linux drivers by influencing if hardware can make it to market. There was a bunch of stuff behind that. I think they would do it through licensing terms for large PC manufacturers.

    @Demolishun > "I am not sure if it was covered, but Windows was doing some shady shit with hardware."

    I remember that. In their defense, Microsoft (Win95) was getting blamed for hardware failures (Diamond Stealth video card+drivers), so Microsoft started dictating to manufactures if they wanted that fancy Win95 logo, they had to adhere to Microsoft hardware standards. Good or evil, by the time WinXP+Win7 came out, plug-n'-play hardware "just worked".

    IBM tried the same thing with OS/2 Warp, but Microsoft beat them to the punch.

    Need more funds to creating new shit like ChatGpt 😀😀😀😀😀

    M$ achieving new low, are you suprised? Its open sectet that its race to the bottom, they have norm to establish new low at least once per quarter. They figured that they cant just ship good shit like they used to, rather, its much better idea to learn cystomer to suffer and get pissed off on daily basis

    From other news, water is wet.
